Wake Forest

There is not much info under the Wake Forest thread. Anxious for any and all input, the good, the bad.......

They work hard. Tends to be southern, conservative. Gets positive reviews around here ( Alabama ). Basketball is big.

Frat life is big at Wake, like most other Southern private universities (although Duke's population is more Northern than the other schools); there is lots of old Southern money (my jaw nearly dropped when I same where some of Wake's students park), although pretty much all Top-50 privates are full of old money. Personally I don't like Winston-Salem, although YMMV. Students, like Duke, tend to be pre-professional in nature. They don't always meet 100% of need, so be sure you can afford to pay a little out of your pocket if you apply ED. The campus is beautiful, and if you are in to skiing/snowboarding the Appalachians are there for a weekend trip (couple of hours depending on where you go).

Very highly regarded in NC and the Southeast. Classes are small and professors are very accessible. You'll have to work very hard to get top grades, but you'll learn a lot. I liked Winston-Salem; I was able to get involved in the community and have a life outside the university. In my mind, Wake is the total package - great academics, big-time sports, beautiful campus, friendly people, not too big and not too small (about 3800 undergraduates).

Thanks everyone, more replies welcome!

If wake wasnt 15 minutes away from me I would have applied. It has such a beautiful campus, and like onedown3togo said, its very highly regarded in the south. I cant really add anything new...it is more conservative than most top colleges, but it I have found there are more liberals than convservatives :( .

Academics are good. Difference isnt note worthy between the top schools though. They call it "Work Forest" because of all the work they give you.

Winston Salem has parts of it nice and parts of it is not so nice...i guess just like every cities. It was rated one of the top 30 cities to live in, in america...or something like that?

duke dreamer - why would someone who lives in north carolina like yourself choose duke over wake or the other way around? just curious as to the preference down there, both are great schools (edge given to duke)

I didnt apply to duke. I wanted to go to duke (and still do really) about a year ago when i started looking at this board, but one thing led to another and has prevented me from applying there. The universities that I applied to in nc are UNC and NC State. They both had BME and both instate tuition. The main reason i didnt apply to Wake was b/c it was simply too close to home

i see, well what about your friends is it wake or duke, im not gonna count the ones at nc state or unc ch

It's the general concensus within NC (and the rest of the country) that Duke has stronger academics than Wake overall. The two people I know who are going to Duke (one is currently a senior, the other graduated) probably had a shot at merit money at UNC, but they didn't really need any to pay for their education.

I am a junior (leaving hs early) so I didnt talk to many seniors my sophomore year to find where they went to college. The seniors this year usually choose one or the other. I go to the most competitive public "school" in nc. I only know of 2 people who applied to both RD and neither Duke nor Wake is their top choice. It isnt like the smarter kids go to Duke instead of Wake (or the other way around).
