Wake vs. W&L vs. Tulane

So, now that I have all my acceptances, it's time to make a decision! And it's looking to be the toughest decision I've ever made.

I've been accepted at Wake Forest University, Washington and Lee University, and Tulane University. Let me first talk about money. My father's employer will pay for 70% of my college tuition no matter where I go to school. I didn't not receive any merit aid at Wake or W&L; I did receive a scholarship for Tulane that covers the rest of the 30% tuition left over. This makes Wake and W&L about $13,000 more expensive than Tulane, however my family can handle it.

I'm interested in premed but want to major in something that is not a science. I want the school I attend to be friendly, have a Greek system, school spirit, and great academics. Basically, all three fall into this category. Another thing, I'm from Texas but my family is moving to Tennessee this summer.

So, what would you do? What should I choose? I know you'll say to visit campus, but I have and am still having a hard time making s decision. Thanks for any insight or advice!

Bump. Anyone?

Okay…they are three wonderful schools. But three very different schools. If your father’s employer pays 70%? That is incredulous. But take it.

Tulane is a fabulous school in New Orleans, uptown. Very pretty campus, fabulous faculty. But its not about athletics there. Greek system but not sports. They have teams that compete but they struggle. Of course someone from Tulane can comment and provide you a different perspective. Strong pre-med program, incuding Tulane Med.

W & L is ALL ABOUT THE GREEKS. But its also all about the drinking. And I mean hard liquor. Very good school…and they are aimed at primarily one thing: working in DC and Capitol Hill. IF that is you, great. They are division III sports. Very tough academically…but also socially very yuppy and upper crust wealth. There are pre-med kids there who do very well.

Wake is a great school, fabulous facilities, Division I- ACC sports. Greek system and some drinking but not as bad as W & L. Its yuppy to a degree…but more diverse than W & L. There are kids of wealth there, but also kids on significant financial aid. TO me its a better mix of things. But that is me. Its not too far from Tennessee. Wake gets kids into Med School, including Wake Med.

Its your choice and you must define what you want out of a college experience, your real priorities and what kind work you will do. Write them down, check off the stuff that is important to you at each school. Visit them if you can and get a vibe…then pull the trigger. When you do, close the book on the others and don’t look back. Buy the gear of the school you select. Good luck.
