Walsh School of Foreign Service

I was wondering if anyone had any advice on applying to SFS. For example, what kind of distinguishing features do they look at as opposed to the regular College? What are the language requirements? Is it more difficult to be accepted than to the regular college? Any advice/information would be greatly appreciated.

what is the SFS acceptance rate vs. college acceptance rate

The most recent statistics posted on their admissions website are for students entering in the fall of 2007. SFS adm rate was 19.6%, college was 18.3%, MBS was 19% and school of nursing was 21.1%. Note that the SAT crit rdg score range was noticably higher for SFS than other 3 schools. I’m curious what it was for this last admissions round.

My daughter was admitted EA last year and will be attending this fall. When we went to the Open House for admitted students in April the asst. dean of SFS said to those admitted students, “You were admitted because you demonstrated a profound interest in international affairs.” So, show that interest…through your EC’s, essays, letters of rec (make sure you mention to teachers, adminstrators, etc. who are writing them that GT SFS is looking for that interest in intnat’l affairs), etc. Remember to SHOW the international interest rather than just telling about it. Paint a picture for the admissoins reader. Good schools are always looking for good writing.

Also, the SFS requires proficiency in a second language, so if you’ve already demonstrated mastery of a second language in high school (e.g., 5 on a AP test. 7 on an IB test, study abroad program, writing an extended essay for IB in your second language, etc.), you’ll be further dazzling the SFS with those relevant credentials. You will still have to complete the SFS’s language proficiency test, but it will help in your admissions.

Do some research on the SFS website, although unfortunately none of GT’s electronic modes of communication are especially impressive. Also, scroll through previous CC posts on the SFS, and finally, read some of the college book guides RE the SFS. All the input helps.

Good luck!

Hi! If I am an international student, English is my 2nd language. So can I apply?

Anyone?.. bump 10 char

Yes, of course. Why wouldn’t you be able to apply?

yeah, gtown has a really outdated and just plain off-putting website. i hope they revamp it some time soon.
