My son has been admitted to the Journalism School at Mizzou as a Walter Williams Scholar. He was awarded the George C. Brooks scholarship, and admitted to the Honors College as well. He is visiting Mizzou right now for the first time with his dad. He has also been admitted to the Walter Cronkite Journalism School at ASU, and to Barrett the Honors College, which has a wonderful reputation. ASU has offered him a full tuition scholarship. He visited ASU in December and was very impressed with the facilities, the infrastructure, the program, and the way they treated him.

The decision is very difficult because the colleges are complete opposites in terms of their style, location, history, etc.Their programs are both excellent. ASU = Downtown Phoenix campus, totally urban, contemporary, state of the art. Mizzou = Traditional classic campus, college town, rich history, big school spirit.

Could you please give us your candid opinion and point of view about both colleges and their journalism schools and honors colleges, and which one you think is better and why? My son needs to make a decision very soon. Any info will be very useful. Thank you!!

Hopefully others will chime in…ASU downtown!, both my son’s stayed at Taylor Place (Downtown) for a program during HS, dorms are new and nice and clean. However 4 years in downtown Phoenix is not for some, there really is nothing to do after 6pm even as a student, however, Taylor Place is right next door to the WC School.
Again downside is the honors program is not a big part, unless you are on the Tempe campus, most kids drop the honors program if they stay on the downtown campus. I have only 3 examples at ASU downtown campus, my DS11 friends who went to ASU, one transferred to the Tempe campus after a major change, one transfered to NAU (northern Arizona) didn’t like downtown Phoenix and the other is still downtown but living off campus/home but is not in the honors program.

Again at the end of 4 years in Phoenix, you graduate from ASU.

I can’t add anything to Mizzou. Good luck

Thank you, Englishman! My son and husband fell in love with Mizzou after their visit. My son says it offers everything he looks for in a college. We have had reservations about our son living in downtown Phoenix for 4 years, and having to commute to Tempe for choir rehearsals, frat meetings, etc. Not very convenient. Mizzou’s campus is great and their journalism program was just named best in the nation. So that is very attractive as well. Your feedback has been very useful and confirms what we thought. I really appreciate it.

I know of a student on the Downtown Phoenix campus who tried to do marching band but the length of the commute even with his own car was just too much. And even though ASU wants to promote all four campuses as a single school and provides free air-conditioned, wireless-enabled shuttles between campuses, the commute from downtown to the Tempe campus seems to be impractical on a regular basis.

Thanks. That makes a lot of sense. The way the college is set up is not practical, especially for a student who wants to be involved in different college activities.

Mizzou offered my son a nice merit package that comes very close to ASU’s scholarship. He decided to go to Mizzou. It offers the college experience he has always dreamed of, he loved the campus. plus his J-school is the best in the country. Decision finally made! :)

All the best to your son, @mariangelita!
