Want me to chance you for Yale?

HEY!

I'm posting this in a state of mild irritation at the HOARDS of "chance me" threads and the legions of CC members replying to them. So I wanted to just point out a few things.

1) If you apply to Yale, you have a chance of being accepted. It's as simple as that. If you apply to any school, you have a chance of being accepted. The only way you have absolutely NO chance is if you don't apply.

2) Most of the members here are students. This means they do not have an accurate idea of how the admissions staff think. Unless the member has experience in admissions (and no, reading threads on these forums does not count as admissions experience) then they have no more idea of whether or not you will be accepted than you do.

3) There is a tendency for replies to state percentages of the liklihood of your acceptance. DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, TAKE THESE NUMBERS AS FACT. THEY ARE PURE FABRICATION. The only numbers you can take as genuine are real statistics, ie acceptance rates etc.

4) So many people start their threads with "I know I don't have a shot". Well then why are you starting a thread? If you didn't think there is a possibility you might get accepted then you wouldn't be applying in the first place. So you're either secretly bragging about having great stats and you want people to say "OMG you sound amazing!! You're totally getting into Yale!!11!" or you're anxious because so many people on these boards are obsessed with Ivy schools and 2400 SAT scores. If it's the first one, then SHH. If it's the latter then have more faith in your achievements. Believe in yourself and others will believe in you too.

5) A lot of people have asked what they need to do to get into Yale (or any other school for that matter). The truth is - nobody can be sure. You just need to do your best. Study hard. Write great essays. Portray yourself in the best way you possibly can. If you're applying to super selective colleges then make sure you have a safety school that you love and would be happy to attend.

Well, I think that's all.

Many are uninformed about the process and can be significantly helped by chancings made by knowledgable and experienced posters. Percentages can also be successful ways of communicating one’s chances as long as the interpreter recognizes the numbers as highly approximate.

Most chance threads are actually unadvertised means of going beyond the prompt and actually advising people on the ways in which they can improve their chances, which is decidedly valuable.

I love you :)
