Hey, I'm a sophomore in High School and ever since I took the PSATs in October I've been a little over excited about going to college. I live in Maryland, and my first choice is Georgetown. I've been reading about everyone here on CC talking about their applications and being chanced and whatnot, so I just want to know if I'm on the right track, and I'd also like to know any tips/advice on the college admissions process.

Also, I'd like to become a lawyer, preferably one that specializes in corporate law, so I'm quite unsure about what my major would be. Political Economy maybe? lol. Anyway...

Grade: 10
GPA: approx. 4.4 weighted
Ethnicity: Asian (Filipino)

10th Grade Course Load:
English II- H
Cisco IT-H
Sports & Entertainment Marketing
French II
Chemistry-H
AP USH
Biology-H
Geometry-H

EC:
Model UN
Football team- freshman year
Guitar (about 4 years now)
Drums
Jiu-Jitsu/Judo
Salutatorian when I was in middle school (idk if that really matters)

That's it. lol. I haven't really been upping my extra curricular activities, but I'm planning to join Key Club, SGA, NHS, FBLA(Future Business Leaders of America) next year. Also, I'm planning to be a peer mediator and do volunteer work at a local nursing home.

You look like you’re on track for a great college! I would suggest not getting fixated on a particular college now since you could change a lot in the next year and a half (you won’t think so, but my college priorities have shifted a lot since sophomore year). But you seem like you’ll be a great candidate for Georgetown to me - just keep up the good work :)

I live in Maryland too and a Sophomore. Georgetown is a very prestigious. I think you’re doing just fine. You have nothing to worry about. But I wouldn’t take too EC’s much 1 or 2 EC’s are just fine. I’m in choir, rock band, and piano and doing veterinary internship. My GC said it’s best to have at least 1 or 2 in-school activities. I think you have a clear shot. But I agree saying that don’t get attached to one school. I wanted to go to the University of Pennsylvania, but that can always change.

if you’re set on becoming a lawyer (like if thats your dream), you should do ECs that focus on political science (most fit major to become a lawyer). it shows colleges that you’re really focused on becoming a lawyer or whatnot. instead of joining clubs, why not make one? maybe start a speech and debate club? or mock trial? if its possible. most colleges like leadership and whatnot.
but most important thing to remember throughout high school is GPA GPA GPA. my brother had put this message on my laptop so that i can read it everyday, “what hurts more? the pain of hard work? or the pain of regret?” it sounds really cheesy but work hard! i always regret getting Bs during sophomore year (my worst year). work hard and you’ll have no problem in getting into georgetown. good luck!

Just make sure you take more AP classes next year and continue to get A’s in your classes. And study for the SAT over the summer; that’s what I wish I did. If you do these things, you’ll be in great shape.
