OK, so recently I started at a new 4-year school after finishing at a 2-year community college and this new school just is not doing it for me as I have mentioned on other boards here. I've talked to adviser and already changed my major within in a week and even then it's not a suitable major for what I wanted. So basically my reasons for transferring entail the following:

Current school doesn't have communications program, just bizarre "media art" and "media analysis" programs (I switched from the former to the latter because the hipster media art scene was just too much to take)

Because the campus is close enough to my house, I commute. However, it is still enough of a drive that I really only go on campus for class and nothing more. It requires going down a frequently busy, traffic-filled highway to get there. Therefore, I don't really get the chance to get to know anyone or get involved in clubs. I want to, it's just club meetings are during hours when it's inconvenient to drive to campus.

Continuing off the living at home thing, it's just too much to handle. When I was at community college, it was fine because the course load was lighter and I could balance home and school better but I can't handle the work I'm doing now with living at home.

The courses offered are not courses I am interested in. At all. That and the way this school schedules classes is horrible. I won't go into it because it's being too picky but once you go here, it's annoying how time-consuming a class will be during your day. They don't use the traditional 50 minutes in 3 days, 75 in 2, 3ish hours in one night format every other college I've been to uses.

I have other reasons but those are the main ones. I would talk to my parents about dorm living, but they don't see it worth the money. I want to transfer so badly to resolve these problems. I went to an out-of-state private school my first year and while I didn't take the transition to college well first semester, I got my footing and gained a sense of independence skills I don't have anymore. My parents were for me going away to school but then insisted the current school I am in was the best choice after I got rejected from another school upstate. I am ready to take out loans and go somewhere else but I think my parents still would pay some of it? But I'm not sure if they'd want to put up more money (they are only paying $1,500 for this semester I'm currently in with financial aid factored in). It's just a matter of talking to them about transferring, I don't know how to approach it... :|

Yeah, use the thread if need be but that was early on when I was more bitter over the campus. My opinions are still the same, but now that I have had a chance to experience the school an extra week or two it’s really not for me, no matter what major I’m in.

Purchase does have a communications major, through the adult learner program, liberal studies. Scroll down and you will see it. This can be a part time program, or full-time, so you could live at home without the work issue, or you could work and rent a place too.

It involves the study of media but not production.

I would think the production that you are interested in would be in the arts part of the college. Purchase is top notch for the arts. If the hipster element bothers you, won’t you find that at any other school in that area of study?

The major that you mention looks great [Media, Society, and the Arts - Home](<a href=“Search results for • Purchase College”>Search results for • Purchase College) and does involve some production, but seems to come from a creative rather than purely technological direction. Are you looking for a more career oriented technical degree?

There is also a journalism major, theater, and a literature major, sometimes linked to communications studies.

Perhaps you could make Purchase work by meeting with an advisor and coming up with an individual plan that means fewer semesters to graduate by better using classes you have already taken.

Arrive early and stay until late, eating dinner at in the cafeteria, participating in clubs, doing work in the library the rest of the time. Try to treat this as if you were living off campus, not “at home” (like you would in HS), spending as much time as possible on campus with your classmates.
Not being able to join clubs or participate in study groups would definitely affect your college career (that’s why colleges typically require students to live on campus).
Try your best to get the highest possible grades because that’s the only way you’ll be able to transfer from your current school (Purchase?)
Request transfer info from a variety of schools with good communication majors: Ithaca, Marist, SUNY New Paltz, SUNY Oswego, SUNY Plattsburgh, Hobard&William Smith, Iona, Clarkson. They’re very different so make sure to look at the majors, requirements, etc. Be aware that you’ll probably have to “catch up” and retake some classes.

Maybe you could be an RA to get free housing on campus? You have already transferred a couple of times and you may lose a lot of credits if you keep transferring. I would try to think of some ways to make your current college work for you so that you can finish your degree and graduate within a reasonable period of time.

So I talked to my parents about how I feel about Purchase and how much I dislike it. They were much more supportive than I thought they would be. They are all for looking at the prospects of transferring and we already have two schools ready to apply for (La Salle and SUNY New Paltz) and looking at switching majors at Purchase and just writing this current semester off as being a one-off fluke. I’m well-aware I may lose credits or may end up staying at Purchase but I’m glad I got it out of the way.
