Hi all,
I recently got admitted into UCI as junior transferring from Cypress College and my current major is Political Science. I am taking a intro to programming class at their summer session and feel like computer science is my true calling. Does anyone know if Donald Bren Computer Science school accept major transfer request from a transfer student? I spoke with someone over the phone and it sounded like since I was a transferred student, they will not allow me to transfer into the computer science major. Has anyone had this experience? or knows someone that has tried to transfer? Thank you in advance!
I have really good grades, if that helps. ^:)^
How many quarter units do you have? Be very careful and try to meet these requirements BEFORE reaching 120 units and you’re guaranteed a change of major.
2.0 Cumm GPA &
2.0 average GPA or above in ICS/CSE 21 and 22 or Informatics 41 and 42, or ICS 31 and 32; and one of the following: Math 2A, Math 2B, ICS 6B/Math 6B or ICS 6D/Math 6D.
as long as you do that before hitting 120 units and can fit everything else in the curriculum into graduating on time (I think 9 quarters for transfer?) you should be accepted.
I transferred in with 105 units. Took 10 units over the summer. About to take 12 more units in the fall (forced to take polisci classes). Need to take 4 more units for ICS 32(can’t register until they release the restriction for major students). So it looks like I will have around 131 units when I apply for the major transfer. However, I am planning on doing management major and some of the 131 units satisfy the requirement for management minor enrollment. Do I still have a chance even though I went above 120 units?
@m2mikee You definitely still have a chance. The change of major rules just GUARANTEE you will get into the major. If you read the rules they are very specific, and there are even rules that govern those rules.(e.g. all change of major requirements must be possible to complete in one academic year). The problem for transfers is we come in with so many units, so if you’re going to change you need to do so very fast to avoid going over 9 quarters. To help you succeed, I recommend you do this- Make sure you can complete your degree within 9 quarters for your newly selected major. If you can graduate sooner than create a realistic schedule showing that you can graduate in that time. It shouldn’t be too hard unless programming has too many units. This way when you apply you can demonstrate it’s feasible. Also keep a high GPA in the classes you’re taking, and maybe talk to your counselor soon about it, so they can know what’s going on. I was fortunate in that I got an e-mail asking if I still had interest in my first choice major (I was accepted as my 2nd major) and then from their my counselor worked with me to create a schedule so I could finish calculus 2 (the course I missing, why I was denied originally). It will probably be difficult creating a schedule/getting classes because if you’re a poli sci major you won’t be able to register for certain major only classes for programming until everyone else has had a go.Fill in your Upper-Division writing class for GE and take any classes you can get into just to get progress started. Sign up for the upper div writing asap though, you can always replace it if you end up getting programming slots… best of luck!
