I am a Junior transfer student that admitted this fall. I wonder if I can change major after I start the class this fall? and Can I complete the requirement in UCI for the new major? Does anyone down that before, change to a major that totally different than the major you declared when you transfer?
I would love to know this also. I got accepted into UCI as Political Science Major this up coming fall. However I am currently taking a intro to programming class at UCI Summer session and totally fell in love with computer science, I feel like its my true calling. I have good grades and only need one more class to fill the major transfer requirement. Does anyone know if this transfer is possible?
It completely depends on what your current major is and which major you’d like to transfer to. Generally speaking, if your new major is within the same division at UCI (i.e. Biological Sciences, Engineering, Arts, Humanities, etc.) as your current major, then you have a fairly good chance of getting your request approved. If not, your request will most likely be denied. The reason for this is that you must have been admissible as a transfer student under your new major as well, and since most majors within the same school have many of the same prerequisite classes, transferring within the same division is not too complicated. For example, going from Biochemistry to regular Biology will be simple since the student will already have completed biology, chemistry, organic chemistry, and some calculus in either case. Problems only occur if you want to drastically change your focus (e.g. from humanities to engineering).
You can’t, but you can switch majors as soon as Fall is over. I was a Junior transfer last fall who changed majors. YOU MUST HAVE EVERYTHING REQUIRED HERE- http://www.changeofmajor.uci.edu BEFORE REACHING 120 UNITS. If you have everything required for the major you want before 120 units you should be fine. It’s as simple as requesting it from a councilor and within 5 minutes it’s changed. The before reaching 120 units part is extremely important, because in the general principles of CoM they specifically state that the change of major rules only apply to 120 units or less. Since you can’t come in with more than 105 units the 120 unit cap shouldn’t effect you too much. You will need to establish a GPA though. You’ll have the Fall quarter to establish a GPA in order to switch majors, which is why I don’t think it’s possible to change in Fall Quarter (you have 0.00 undefined GPA when you come in as a a transfer). If you do a Summer class to establish GPA and have all the prereqs to change majors that might be the only way I can think of to change majors in Fall.
If you’re already a student the transfer admissions requirements wouldn’t matter, instead defer to http://www.changeofmajor.uci.edu
@CaliEconTransfer I just got approved to switch from electrical engineering to computer engineering today by my student adviser, and it definitely wasn’t because I’d completed the requirements listed on the page you linked since my community college had no equivalents for EECS 31. In fact, based on her email, it sounded more like she reviewed my previous transcripts to determine whether or not I would also meet the transfer admissions standards for CompE. So I would say it is definitely possible to petition for a major change before school even begins, with the one caveat being that my original major and my new major were so similar in terms of requirements that the switch wasn’t a big issue.
@ARandomPerson1 - if you’re a transfer then you had more than 90 units, which puts you in a different position than the change of major page is talking about. So they wouldn’t have looked at the requirements listed class by class, but rather whether you’ve made substantial progress and can graduate on time. In other words you were able to change majors but you weren’t guaranteed to do so by CoM requirements. I’m just trying to answer OPs question without giving any false hope, every school is different but if you meet the requirements listed on the CoM they MUST accept you(you didn’t for that major since you were over 90 units, so your case COULD HAVE gone the other way I.E they could have said no).

90 units or less, unless the student has already made substantial progress in courses required for the major. Students must demonstrate a plan to graduate in no more than 15 total quarters.
@CaliEconTransfer Oh my bad; I didn’t notice that engineering majors had a cap of 90 units instead of the usual 120. Still, this would be something to keep in mind for incoming transfer students intending to switch to engineering, since most transfers come in with between 90 and 120 units.
engineering majors had a cap of 90 units instead of the usual 120?
True its a cap of 90!
