Want to transfer to Michigan State University

I would love to transfer to Michigan State University, but have just come to this decision over the past week. I'm currently a freshman at Northwood University (Midland, Michigan), and will be finishing up my first semester in a couple of weeks. Now, I have a great amount of questions. What my parents suggest I do is stop going to Northwood (Because only certain credits transfer) and go my home's community college to get more transferable credits. Does this seem like a good idea? Also, what I'm most worried about is getting in. I JUST decided I want to do this. Is it too late to apply for next year? Are my grades good enough? Currently I have a 3.4 GPA, and in high school I had a 3.4 GPA with a 22 ACT score. Thanks in advance for your response!

I have two questions.

1st) Why did you have a 3.4 GPA and a 22 ACT? I had a 2.8 GPA and a 22 ACT; but that was because I didn’t try in HS.

2nd) Why do you want to transfer?

I’ll break it down like this:

Have you scouted out your local CC or the CC you are planning to attend? The reason I ask is because CC can vary greatly. Someone are campus types with students in the 18-22 range; so in some ways they almost feel university-like. Others are just office-rooms with presentations in them and the average age of attendance is 28-40. So your experience at CC will vary greatly. Thus you might really regret going.

Next up there is time and credit requirements. When you goto CC you usually have to fill out a certain amount of units and courses to transfer. [Integrative Studies - Admission | Michigan State University Office of Admissions](http://admissions.msu.edu/admission/transfer_integrativeStudies.asp)
So because of this it might take longer to transfer and graduate.

The last point, and this relates to my 2nd question, is what do you hope to achieve at MSU?

Like if you turned over a new new leaf; you are really to try really hard and bust your balls off. So you want to drop out of Northwood and goto CC. Then pull off solid As in classes such as Calc 1, then transfer to UMichigan. Because that school is rated one of the absolute best in the nation and it has a major that you absolutely love. Then doing that major will put you on a career path that you want for the rest of your life. In that kind of scenario I would rec you transfer.

But if you want to transfer just because you like the campus better or you didn’t get in from HS or something like that I wouldn’t recommend it. Because you will most likely end up in the exact same place in life after graduation except it’ll take you longer to get there / be more hassle.

Thanks for taking a look and asking questions back! You have a good point about my ACT score, but the truth is I just couldn’t focus when I took it, and ended up with a disappointing score. This is really bad, because the 22 is actually from a 2nd attempt  Once again, I just couldn’t focus. HOWEVER, that being said, I think I have turned over a new leaf; My study habits are getting better, and I do plan on trying very hard no matter where I end up. The reason I want to leave Northwood University is because it’s programs are not what I expected them to be. (If you want I can go into specifics, but I have learned this from LOTS of talking to my professors about my future course, comparing programs, seeing what MSU has to offer that Northwood doesn’t have, and more). As far as the community college goes, I would be attending Northwestern Michigan College. With this CC, I would not be worried about what transfers or the social aspect. I would only take classes that transfer (looking into it/talking to MSU before I take them, of course), and already have many friends at the college.

MSU’s acceptance rate is like 73% percent. If you can get a college GPA of like 3.5 and apply for sophomore standing I think you would great chance to get in.

Do you know when transfer applying opened up and when it closes? I’ve searched for dates but can’t seem to find them.
