Hello, I currently finished my sophomore year at Virginia Tech. I came in wanting to pursue a degree in Computer Science within the College of Engineering, but I had a tough time and decided that it wasn’t the right fit for me. So my spring semester(the one I just completed), I took business classes to attempt to transfer into the college of business as it was my back up. I enjoyed this Spring semester much more than the other three semesters I spent slaving for CS. However, I will be graduating late if I do pursue a business degree. And because that is the case, I wish to transfer into a better college for business and since McIntire is the best in the state, I am highly considering transferring next year. However, I am worried about my chances of getting into UVA so late(as a third year student). I read on the UVA transfer website that only 2nd and 3rd year is possible. I am seeking some advice on how I could work through this. Any input would be helpful!
From what I have read they take a low number of external candidates. Check their website and make sure you have alll the pre-reqs. Foreign language can be taken the summer before you start unless you are fortunate enough to be exempt from it. Off the top of my head there are 2 accounting classes, 2 econ classes, an english general business, stats and some others. They all must be completed before starting at Mcintire but not before applying. You would have to complete I believe a mini um of 60 credits at Virginia. My guess is you would have to wait until January to apply which would mean you would be very far ahead. Why not call them directly to see what your options are. Everyone I have spoken to has been super helpful (my son is transferring in as a 2nd year in September). Good luck
Since you are interested in business and have taken classes in the college of engineering did you consider the BIT program at Virginia Tech? (business information technology) Graduates from that program are highly recruited.
Not to be the bearer of bad news, and I’m certainly not 100% sure of anything, as I don’t represent UVA nor it’s admissions department, but I believe in order to transfer to UVA, you must be applying to be a 2nd or 3rd year by the time you arrive on grounds. Seeing as the earliest you could possibly transfer would be spring, which is super competitive to begin with, I don’t know if that qualifies you(though you would technically be a third year so who knows). As well, you apply for mcintire at the end of your sophomore year, even if you were accepted halfway through your junior year, I don’t even know if they would allow such late mcintire students. I think it’s basically impossible to get into the business school, and very difficult to transfer at all if it’s even allowed.
