i sent my sir to berk for eecs, but it’s spring semester. Now wash u took me off the waitlist. I don’t know where i should go.

go to washu, its a great school
y wait till spring?

berkeley is a better school but if u dont feel comfortable with spring semester go to washu. u should visit both schools to decide.

i say wash u is a better school...it just seems to have the whole college experience thing going

"i say wash u is a better school...it just seems to have the whole college experience thing going"

what? berkeley doesn't have the college experience thing going on? sure you'll be behind a semester, but you're definately not gonna miss out on it.

i say berkeley. especially if you're in-state.

yeah i m a in state, ummmm how easy is it to change majors at wash u and i don't really have that much time to decide because i m just off the waitlist and they only give me like 3 days

Call Berkeley and see if they can bump you up to fall semester now... I've heard they might use the spring admit list like a waitlist.

i just called them and they said it's still in review

suggest you don't base your decision on spring admit or not. Pick whichever school you would attend if you were offered fall admit for both. 1 semester is really small in the overall picture.

berkeley and washu are total on par prestige wise. despite the fact that berkeley's name is "older"... washu is an emerging top 15. all depends on what u wanna major in. i would never say berkeley is better.. and never under-look washu. TONs of people get into berkely while rejected at washu. so just pick the one that u like better.

I disagree. I definitely think Berkeley has more prestige for the average American...or even internationally. But you shouldn't pick a school based only on prestige.

Have you enrolled in the fall extension program? Because if you have, then you definitely won't "miss out" on a semester since you get to live in the dorms and go to classes like everyone else. If you haven't enrolled in it, then no worries. You have one more semester of vacation and you can still graduate in four years (provided you received credit for AP or IB exams.)

For location: Berkeley wins hands down. Urban bay area vs. suburbanville.

And being instate, you can't beat that price so take advantage of your residency...unless you have a ****load of financial aid from WUSTL.

Wait you're doing engineering? Ok this should be a no-brainer. BERKELEY! Go Bears!

um... we're talking about prestige here, not quality of education or anything, so this is the one time i dont go against bring out us news.

im not gonna say washu is MORE prestigous, but unless u havent read the newspaper for 10 years, it is definitely an emerging prestigous school

*BTW, its berkeley's GRADUATE school that gives it the name. its gradschool is on par with harvard, but its undergrad is only UMich level

Prestige is name recognition. The average adult will not read the yearly edition of the US News rankings. High school students planning on applying to college will. Although a lot of it comes from its research, Berkeley does have more prestige than WUSTL.

And don't belittle public schools by saying its "its undergrad is ONLY UMich level"

UMich and Berkeley are both great schools, and the quality of teaching one receives at each is comparable to Harvard.

well, do u care if the average american heard the name... or do u care if top employers or gradschool adcomms heard the name... i could care less if one of the person in the supermarket has never even HEARD of WUSTL... and i never said berkeley wasnt good, but i think ur giving it more credit than it deserves and washu less credit than it deserves. sure lots of people has heard of cornell, but 2 years ago, i never heard of williams. how do they do in terms of producing successful students? williams is right under princeton when it comes to gradschool feeder score.

Ok well using the ultimate prestige calculator, US News, then UPenn and Duke are more prestigious than Stanford, MIT, Caltech and Columbia? Besides that, USNews is prejudiced against publics...even a top ranked Stanford faculty member wrote a letter to US News saying so (and used Berkeley and UMich as specific examples.)

And prestige is name recognition for the average person. As for grad schools adcoms, both WUSTL and Berkeley look great. But Berkeley engineering probably looks even better.

but why does it matter if a person on the street has heard of your school? are they gonna pay you?? NO. heck, if its only average person, then kill yourself over going to harvard, cuz that's obviously "the most prestigous" school there is, everything else dims in comparrison, even stanford and princeton.

what matters is your employer or whoever is gonna contribute to your further success.

Yeah ok no **** we've established that. So don't whip out US News and say that's what employers go by. Because they don't.

And to employers and grad school people, Berkeley ENGINEERING is better than WUSTL's equiv. to engineering.

xokandy...(your name is too long..lol!),

Actually I think you are really mistaken. Even to schools' deans (I think in recruitment too), WashU is less prestigious than Berkeley (see peer's assessment scores--it's close to (not quite) a measure of prestige within the circle, not "on the street").
