wash u med program..

i've heard that wash u is such a tough school that some of their own kids don't get into their med school b/c they have gpa's that are too low...this wasn't just an isolated situation; it apparently happened quite often (compared to other school of the same quality), in order to keep their statistics up. has anyone else seen or heard this to be true?

i'm not sure about this school yet..i'm a good student and i want to go into medicine, but i don't want to go to a school where there's a good chance i'll be closed out just so they can keep their high reputation. any truth in this at all, or just a rumor?

Going to WashU undergrad does not make you a more competitive candidate for WashU medical school, at least over schools of the same caliber.

Kristie, you should contact WashU and get more info on this. I have heard that WashU Med reserves a meaningful portion of their class for WashU undergrads.

Kristie:

While I hope the following information is helpful, I think that picking a college based on admissions to medical school is not the right focus. Go to a college where you'll be happy and thrive, which is what is most important for medical school.

That said, WashU medical school is top five in the country, and statistically, it has a student body with close to, if not the, highest average GPAs and MCAT scores. They tend to have 10 to 15 WashU undergrads in each class, which is by far the largest number from any single undergraduate school. However, given the quality of undergrads at WashU who apply to the medical, you're going to need very strong credentials to get in. The bottom line is that is may be a bit easier to get into WashU medical school from WashU undergrad, but not hugely so.

I think, by the way, you'll find that this is true at all of the undergrads that have top level medical schools. Medical schools only have about 100-150 slots in a class, and they won't generally fill up a half or even a quarter from their undergrads, even though there may be many qualified applicants from their undergrad school applying. That is why, as I suggested at the outset, looking at medical school admissions is not very helpful in picking an undergrad.

thanks to everyone for their help! i definitely would never pick a school solely based on their admissions rates of course, but i thought it was something important to consider for later.
