Which one would you choose, and why? Any input is greatly appreciated!

No brainer…ND

BTW…outside of the CC community, many don’t even know what WashU is. They think it’s UWash, the state school.

no brainer…WashU

unless the kid plays football, of course

ND. no question. ND is lot a of kids first choice . Wash U is not.

No brainer, either. Seriously, what is the intended major?

Yes, what is your major

(But I still say ND…there is NOTHING like ND…amazing alumni network, too.)

DunninLA’s got the right idea.

I would definitely go with Notre Dame

Wow, such unhelpful posts…

If pre-med, I would suggest Wash U. If you are an liberal atheist, I suggest Wash U (part of the reason I turned down Notre Dame). If, however, you are into sports, intense school pride, mixed with good academics, I would go with Notre Dame.

ND unless pre-med.

Wow, thank you guys for your opinions! This is helpful for me. I am thinking engineering right now. And I’m really not religious to be honest, but from what I’ve gathered I don’t think that would be a huge issue… Anyone else want to chime in?

Go to WashU. Sure ppl have heard of ND, but it’s the same as they have heard of OSU, LSU, and ASU.

zerchi, what are your stats? I am curious what ONE must have to get accepted into ND and WUSTL. jr son might be a candidate for these schools. also, what other colleges did you let ND and WUSTL know that you were applying to? The anecdotes seem revealing to me vs the summary stat of the admissions profile.

and, since the money part is really the 2nd phase of a college’s response to your app (after the admit part), how was the money from each? any merit? or, if you have need, to what extent did each college meet this need?

Now to YOUR question: my perception is that ND has a superior alumni NW, and that can be pretty valuable. After all, in the end, you just gotta get in the door at places, then you can be off to the races and work your butt off, show your stuff. You cant show your stuff if they do not even let you in the door.

but both seem like great choices from the view at 50k feet that I have of them.

roderick, academically, all the graduate schools would know the better academics of Washington U v. ND…

in the job market, do you really think that an employer would hire a student from a school just because its football team was well known?

Wash U has got my vote.

roderick,

My stats: 2190 SAT, ~4.5 weighted GPA, in top 5% of class, National Merit Commended Student… As you can see my test scores weren’t stellar but solid enough. I think a lot of people would agree that it’s really all about test scores in the end, but if they reach a certain nebulous threshold, having the essays/grades/resume will do it for you. That seems to be my case. Of course, don’t miss an opportunity to interview and visit. At least that’s the wisdom I can pass on having nearly finished the whole process.

I don’t believe I ever let either school know what others I applied to. However, and this may not be significant, I did put down Wash. U. and Notre Dame as my top two choices for the NM Commendation. Or something like that…

As you might have guessed, neither offered me merit money and my parents told me not to bother with the need based aid. So I’m definitely uneasy with that but my parents are behind me so what the heck?

I like ND more. Someone else said it earlier, unless you’re premed and/or hate sports go with ND.

No brainer…ND

Maybe in where you live (Alabama, I believe?). Trust me, WashU very well known and very well regarded throughout the middle of the country, and no one thinks of the U of Washington. One more time – it’s all regional.

JohnAdams12- this is why no one believes you’re a thirty-something investment banker with degrees from Princeton and Stanford, but rather a current Pton student (class of '12) - because you’re demonstrating naivete about how hiring works. Yes, plenty of employers might indeed hire because they know a school’s football team. Employers pick schools of interest to them for many reasons. It may be academic excellence, it may be the school is close by and it’s convenient to interview there, it may be that the HR guy or the president went there, it may be that they have alums from that school who enjoy going back to campus to recruit, it may be just inertia (we’ve been at that school for X years and it’s just easy to go back to it). No one sits and looks at USNWR rankings and compares academics when they recruit. And it is not uncommon for a large company to recruit at several different “levels” of students (i.e., a school in the top 10, a school in 10-20, a school in 20-30). In which case they are still all evaluating them against one another.

I support WashU

Wash U is almost unheard of here in Michigan. This is a choice btwn arguably the most widely known college in the country & one of the most unidentifiable "top’’ colleges in the country. There is still anti-Catholic sentiment in the country, so if you are going into an industry where that might be a problem, choose WUSTL. Otherwise go to ND.
