just want to clear something up... can anyone tell me if the following statement is true or false...

"when the number of scholarships awarded says 'up to 3' does that mean that only three people out of all the applicants get it?"

i find that ridiculous... :(

can we still get merit scholarships if we didn't apply for any of those merit scholarships [in other words, did any of u get any merit $ when you DIDN'T apply for the merit scholarhips?]. thanks... [i'd really like to get some merit $ and help my parents out since i'm not getting any need-based :(]

I got merit money and didn't apply for any merit scholarships, but I think that the people who got money that way all found out when they got their financial aid offers. I'm not sure if they're giving any more out.

As for your first question, I was wondering that too.

thanks for your response. i'll still hope for $ b/c i got my notification about not qualifying for need-based last week. and for uw i got my notification of not qualifying and my package [sorta] about 3 weeks apart.

this brings up my great dilema... should we really save for college [of course we should but it seems to hurt financial aid greatly]...? no one can dish out $42,000/year for 4 years... and then why does everyone say that good grades/working hard will get you a lot of money. i have got NOTHING yet from anywhere [got in to 3 schools already]. i'm disappointed. i know i shouldn't e x p e c t merit $ from wash u b/c i know everyone qualifies but at the same time, i'm confused and a bit frustrated...

Yes, it is possible to get merit money even if you didn't apply for it.
I applied to the Moog(?) scholarship (which picks 3 ppl out of thousands of applicants) and failed to make an impression apparently. However, they offered me an Eliot Scholarship (never heard of it before, came along with the acceptance letter) worth $14,000 which brought the price down to $35,000 (international), which is still a lot but at least in the $30k's :)
So don't give up hope! You might still get a merit scholarship!

I got an eliot scholarship and i did not apply for the moog scholarship. Why did you think that, just out of curiousity? I am EXTREMELY happy with my financial aid package! It makes me want to decide to go to WashU right now, but I must wait and hear from my other colleges.

eliot is one of the generic names for merit based aid. i didnt apply for any specialty scholarships (moog, nemerov, danforth etc) but i got an eliot.

im also exteremly satisfied with my financial aid. wash u was already #1 - so it was a no-brainer.

im an ervin scholarship winner (full tuition and a stipend), but before i received my award, i was scared out of my wits that i could not afford college. if i were to do all of my applications again, i would apply to only schools with merit-based aid because i do not qualify for need-based. B.U., Duke, Univeristy of Florida, B.C., Howard, Pittsburg, Xaviar, Tulane, and others would definately have been choices if I would have known the financial difficulties of the college decision. (Now I know where my children are going to apply!)
