Found more exciting information. “In addition, the W&L Promise ensures aid awards of at least full tuition for admitted students from families with a total family income below $100,000 and assets typical for their income.” Hopefully that $100,000 means AGI.
I can’t speak for W&L - it’s got a great endowment and the Johnson Scholarship is beyond outstanding in that it’s not just a few slots.
But most schools - it’s likely not AGI. But I think it’s the “normal” assets that is what pushes people away from aid.
I had a discussion with Cornell. If your net worth is $1 million, they don’t care if you earn $10K a year - you’re not getting a nickel.
They said spending your wealth (and $1 million today is not a lot) - that spending it is an investment.
If you score with W&L aid wise, it’s awesome. And they’re probably as reasonable as any school - but don’t get emotionally tied to anywhere and choose the right school for you based on “fit” and “finances”.
After you see their offer, then get excited.
did anyone else get an email today asking for more FA documents?
Did anyone receive a hand written note from a student in admissions asking if they had any questions about professors at W&L?
No - my D is up for another scholarship, not Johnson. She got a hand written note the other day from a student asking about questions in general.
That’s just part of college marketing. She got one from UGA too and a few other schools.
Yes, it is a part of marketing. My D received several of hand-written notes from different colleges.
Tangent: my son was admitted ED, so no marketing needed to persuade him to attend. He, too, got a handwritten card from a student welcoming him and offering to answer any questions. W&L is a class act.
No mailed note received, but my daughter got lovely, personal email replies back from all of the thank you emails she sent following the Johnson experience.
My D received the handwritten note as well. I agree, @Rue4. The way both current students and faculty have made themselves available (by email, Zoom, text) to the Johnson finalists has been impressive.
Was the Johnson experience in person or zoom this year?
As a parent, my only concern with W&L - because I’ve also experienced only great stuff, but there’s an awful lot of chatter about drinking, drinking, drinking. I’m sure kids can do well there if they don’t drink…but the kids that post…that’s all you read. I, for one, have been impressed with all interactions.
I think if we cannot raise kids with basic self-discipline in 18 years, there is nothing we can do when they are in colleges.
Since my son isn’t there yet, I can’t at all speak about the drinking there. But I can say he is the straightest of straightest arrows who basically does not drink At. All. I wouldn’t be surprised if he had a drink or two occasionally at W&L, but I know he’s not suddenly going to go crazy. So – there will be kids who aren’t drinking a ton there as well as those that do.
(And before you think I’m out of touch, one of my other sons was the poster child for being wild and partying to excess – the W&L son is the polar opposite!)
I know you asked this question of Rue, but I can answer you. Yes, the Johnson weekend was a Saturday-Sunday zoom event. While I’m so bummed my D missed out on what sounds like an amazing experience, W&L made the best of it. I’m grateful it was all live interactions rather than asynchronous interviews.
My student was not a finalist but was for a tuition only scholarship. I’ve been several times to the school and my daughter as well. It’s very nice - and it does seem a great platform where you will be known, and not just as a student ID #ask-the-dean-topics:ask-the-expert-live-chat-w-the-dean-feb-22
I know if you are a Johnson finalist you are in. I’m not sure about the secondary scholarships - but less than 3 weeks to go:)
Does anyone have any idea about RD notification date for W&L…non-scholarship candidates? Any predictions even?
The admissions website says 4/1/2021.
In years past, it said 4/1 and was March. Hoping!!
So many college decisions will come out next week. W&L shall be one of them. So exciting!
Do Johnson Scholar results come out today or Monday? My D originally was told Monday, but she received an email saying today. She’s not sure which is correct.
Results will be released today, 3/19/2021, at 8pm EDT.
