I was recently offered admission to New York University and Washington and Lee. My undergraduate studies will involve journalism and social work, and my graduate studies will focus on Law. I was admitted into NYU with the expectation that I will spend my first year abroad in London; I would not be able to declare a major until junior year. NYU offered me a scholarship totaling $45,000; however, I do not know if this award will be given all four years. Washington and Lee offered me close to a full ride guaranteed for all four years. I am in internal tumult as I try to make a decision. NYU was my dream school; I never believed I could be admitted into W&L. Please help me by providing any advice. Note: Financial Aid is critical to my family because they are not funding my education; the loans are all on me.

You are comparing two VERY different schools. If aid is critical, I’d take the near-full ride at W&L, especially given your academic interests. Neither journalism nor social work is high-paying, and law school is expensive. You will want to minimize debt.

Thank you for replying with such alacrity. They are VERY different. I had no one to help me in the admissions process and actually went behind my parents’ backs to apply to the schools I did. They had wanted me to go to community college. So, now it seems W&L will be my freedom.

Given those circumstances, I’d say you have what it takes to be successful anywhere! Congratulations on your hard work & tenacity.

You should be very proud of your accomplishments.

I’d go to W&L. It’s higher in the rankings and I’d think that the housing would be better.

After being in AP/Honors classes with overly pedantic students for so long, it feels amazing to hear that. Thank you. Yes, my father did not take it well at all. It was near Christmas when he discovered my opposition and he did not speak to me for two weeks. Now, he realizes that I am able. I just wish my high SATs, high GPA, leadership positions, and status as salutatorian would have proved that to him earlier. The choice is now totally mine and it is a difficult one to make.

Thank you, City Entrepreneur. I cried of sadness when I first received acceptance to NYU because I did not think my father would allow me to go to London. To my surprise, hours later I was accepted into Washington and Lee. What colleges are you deciding between?

Take WLU’s scholarship money, and go have yourself a great college experience. It’s in a very tiny town in a rural area, but you’ll get an incredible education. Have you looked at the Poverty major? And the journalism program is top notch. There are many study abroad opportunities. If law is in your future, save your undergrad dollars and take WLU’s full ride. One caveat: GO VISIT before you accept. WLU is a unique place with a very unique vibe and not for everybody.

W&L has a very strong and historic Journalism program.
