I am thinking about visiting Washington college in chestertown, MD. They are supposed to have an excellent Enligh and Creative writting program, which i am interested in. Does anyone know what the other academics are like? Also (very importantly), what are the students like? Liberal, conservative...closeminded, wide world view???

anybody????

Do visit. We visited and it wasn't right for my daughter who is looking for a more artsy/quirky environment. Washington is in a very small town out in the middle of nowhere. The nearest Kmart is a 45 minute drive if that gives you an idea. The campus is pretty but the dorms struck us as on the run down side. The students we met were more conservative than liberal, I guess I'd discribe them as preppy. They did seem friendly, however. The Greeks seem to rule the social life and our questions about what there was to do if you didn't go Greek were never quite answered. The writing and English departments are their strong suit. They can be VERY generous with financial aid and merit scholarships. But again, do visit to see if it's the right atmosphere for you.

thank you.

You might want to take a look at St. Mary's College of Maryland or Mary Washington University. Both have excellent English programs. If you're willing to go a little farther, look at Kenyon, Oberlin and Knox College in Illinois. Gettysburg in PA has a good English program too.
