Is the Districr of Columbia a state or something? I just noticed this and I always thought that Washington DC was located in Washington lol

…wow… just wow.

hahahahahaha… what? -____-

are you from the US?

ignorant…

Perfect example of the success of our education system.
…Assuming you’re from the US.

O.o!!!

To answer the question, no, it stands for the District of Columbia, which is obviously not a state, as it has “district” in the name.

:(

/cries

did they start hiding maps from elementary school kids since I left?

Man I hope this is a joke thread, but I have a feeling it’s not.

D.C. is on the East coast, no where near the state of Washington. If you’re from here, have you ever even looked at something like a 7th grade U.S. History text?

No, I know that Washington DC is on the East Coast and that the state of Washington is on the West coast… but is D.C. (i.e. District of Columbia) its own state or something? Or is it part of Maryland?

AlwaysTired, The District of Columbia is not a state, it is a federal district created specifically to be our nation’s capital. I believe land was taken from both Maryland and Virginia to create it, but it is it’s own separate city, not part of any state. DC also has its own mayor and city government.

Clearly you didn’t know it was on the East.
You specifically said
Or did you think that Washington was on the East as well?
Either way you contradict yourself.

Yeah, I thought that there was another Washington (DC) on the East. I just never knew what DC was. hehe

Please tell me you’re not from the United States…

I just never learned APUSH till now
I know it is an aberration.

It’s not counted as one of the fifty states, but the residents therein don’t count as residents of either Virginia or Maryland. There’s some controversy over their congressional representation; as it stands, they get to elect one representative who may speak but not vote. At the same time, however, they are not exempt from federal taxes. (Their license plates say “Taxation Without Representation” to protest this.) There has a movement to give them full state’s rights, politically speaking, for years. The trouble is that the District is overwhelmingly Democratic, so any such bill is always struck down in Congress.

AlwaysTired, you’re obligated to tell us where you’re from…
