Washington Univ. in St Louis or Geroge Washington Univ.

hi, guys

I have received admission from Washington Univ. in St Louis , Geroge Washington Univ. and Boston Univ.

Which one should I go? Could you please give me some advices?

Thanks

Um... a couple of questions. Is this law school admission? If so, where do you want to practice? Do you want to clerk after graduation? Any special practice areas? Is money an issue?

All other things being equal, I would choose GW of those three. Basically, DC has a huge legal market, and GW is one of the best schools there. Georgetown is better, and UVA is better, but UVA is a couple of hours away. Still, GW students will have a lot of opportunities for work, summer employment, externships, and the like. There would also be a lot of opportunities to sample different types of law - patent, corporate, politics, civil rights - you name it. IMO, you would not get that from WU or BU.

Don't be too seduced by rankings. Those three schools are pretty close in ranking - and, not to completely rag on BU, but it's overrated. You would be better off at BC if you want to practice in Boston - more networking and its considered a better school (rankings indicated such until this year - very recent reversal, which is more about selling magazines than any appreciable change in reputation).

Money can be an issue. Figure out how much, with all expenses, that it will cost. Don't rely on just tuition, because cost-of-living expenses can vary by almost $10,000/year. That's $30k over three years and about $40k once you are done paying interest on that loan.

how about the reputation of Washington Univ. in St. Louis?

I honestly don't know. I know that it is ranked fairly well, but I can't tell you anything much about it besides that.

When I researched law schools, I went a little OCD and researched about 40 schools in-depth. Most are on the east coast, so WU didn't make that list.

US News is useless for just rankings. It is very useful for other things. Pick up a copy and flip to the back. It will have a section with each school and stats. It will give the geographic distribution of graduates, which is very important. Unless you are chronic lurker, you probably haven't seen all of the posts about it - but, unless you go to a top 14 school (and even then there is some geographic preference), you're going to end up in the same region that your school is in. If you want to practice in Boston, go to a top 10 school; if you don't get in, in descending order, go to BC, BU, Suffolk. Throw in UConn or another reputable, nearby school.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that you cannot and should not make this decision without considering where you want to work. With those schools, the overriding consideration is going to be geography. If you go to WU, you'll probably end up in the Midwest, somewhere. BU - Boston, and GW- DC area. You could end up somewhere else, but most of the recruiting, contacts, and alums will be in those areas.

thank you for your kindness!

:) You're welcome.

And welcome to CC.

Wash. Unv. in STL has a poor Law School Rep.

BU is ranked 23rd
George Wash Unv (in D.C.) is ranked 20th

However, BU has the brightest students -- according to statistics. Highter LSAT scores, GPAs, and the BAR pass rate.

However, the answer to your thread title -- based on my opinion:

George Washington Unv. is your best bet.

Getting into law school is so based so much on how well you do in undergrad, that choosing the school where you will be most comfortable and happy is the important thing. You need to get the best GPA possible. The GPA and the LSAT are the two main components of a successful law school application. You will get a better GPA if you go to the school you like the best. Any one of these 3 schools can get you into a good law school. So relax, and just think abou the next 4 years right now, don't ge ahead of yourself.

The head of admissions at U of I law school, despises WashU. He knows we're "better than them." I can't confirm but he was pretty honest about everything so I wouldn't say he was lying. I like GW out of those 3 too.

But if the original poster wants to practice in the Midwest, he would be best off going to WashU. This seems to be one of those decisions which can be best made on where he wants to live after graduation.
