@nerdmd
Just curious, but what makes you “LOVE” the current students/environment at Harvard more than the students/environment at WashU? I also visited both schools, and my dad went to Harvard. I have found many students at Harvard have inflated egos – purely based on the fact that they think they are set on a path to success. On the other hand, the students at WashU seemed genuine, down to earth, and equally smart. I’m not suggesting that these down to earth people don’t exist at Harvard, but just be careful that your decision is based on “true fit” rather than the prestige associated with a label.
@worcester22
I’m not choosing a school based off of prestige because it doesn’t matter to me. Visiting both schools I feel like Harvard was a better fit. Yes, WashU is amazing but based off of fit in my opinion and my families Harvard was better. I didn’t sense the Harvard stereotypes at all visiting like; I said before it’s all about what school offers the best fit for the student. Answering your question I love Harvard’s student body over WashU’s because I share more in common with Harvard’s. The stereotype of having to be well-rounded it dead there. While visiting I realized that I didn’t have to be great at a million things but great at what I wanted to do. Yes, Harvard students are very confident and know that they’re very intelligent and that’s what’s pushing me towards Harvard even more. The resources are out of this worldddddddddd! My friend is currently doing research at the NSA along with Uchicago, MIT, Harvard, Stanford, And some more of the ivy leagues exclusively. So, you can’t say WashU offers the same resources because it’s not true. I can go on and on but yeah that’s only part of the reason. Continue asking questions I love them.
@nerdmd
“You can’t say WashU offers the same resources because it’s not true.” Yet WashU has the best campus, food, and student life in the nation. It has a top-ranked undergraduate business program, and school of architecture + design – unlike Harvard. Its grads are getting jobs at Amazon, Google, and Microsoft – just to name a few. Is WashU as prestigious as Harvard on paper? No, but for future reference don’t go around professing your love for Harvard on another school’s ED sub.
“I love Harvard’s student body over WashU’s because I share more in common with Harvard’s” this has to be a meme
It’s good that you are choosing schools baed on student body and what you perceive as good fit for you. Ultimately how you work in an environment will determine if you thrive or not. Of course resources are important, however, I would not take of washu simply on the basis of harvard having more resources. It is true that in general harvard has more resources. We are talking about harvard here. But the difference is really not by a whole lot and how far you go in either school wont be determined by the differences in resource ability, rather how much work you are willing to put into your education. Washu has the best social work program in America and also has very highly ranked (top 5) business school, medical school, and school of architecture. As others have mentioned people go on to do amazing things. I have personally had friends who have done or are doing work for google, microsoft, amazon, and NASA. So trust me, we do have more than adequate resources.
Are you planning on becoming a doctor (asking because of your name)? As a recent graduate, and first year medical student I can say that washu has one of the best premed programs around. Advising and interviewing prep are top notch. They are really great at getting people into not just med schools but top med schools. To give you an example people from my year have gotten into: Northwestern, Uchicago, Upitt, NYU, Johns Hopkins, Stanford, Columbia, Yale, Vandy, washu, and many more amazing medical schools.
If I apply ED2, would that decrease my chances from applying to ED 1?
Hi CC,
I think I made a massive mistake. I submitted my app about a week ago, and just this week I read that WashU only wanted around 250 words for their supplement, but me (being as stupid as I am) thought that they wanted 500, judging by the word limit in the Common App Writing Supplement Box. In reality, they gave that text limit to provide some “flexibility” to the length of the supplement…sigh
As you probably guessed, I went ahead and wrote a 490 word long supplement. Yes, you read that right, four hundred and ninety words, nearly 2 times the suggested length.
I think it demonstrates my interest in the major I applied for in an interesting way, and WashU didn’t explicitly say that they would penalize you for going over 250…
…but I’ll be real here: I might have just torpedoed my chances in the stupidest way possible.
Am I overreacting or did I really pull a major screw up here? I’m so mad at myself right now >:( WashU was my top choice (Early Decision I) and because of my idiocy I probably just relegated myself to the auto rejection bin. ARGH!
I’m thinking if they gave a 500 word limit in the text box for flexibility then they were expecting that some people might need to use that many words and wouldn’t penalize them.
@janiemiranda I think that is the case; however, WashU’s website says to use only “a few words less or more” than 250, but the problem is that they also say “let your story be the length that it is.” At the same time, they also require 250 words at bare minimum, so I’m not even sure anymore…
Here’s hoping my application doesn’t get trash-binned for having a supplement that went over the “word limit”. I should have noticed it earlier, ARGH!
EDIT: the IvyCoach article on the WashU supplement also says around 300 words. Guess I’m screwed…
Any perspective from anyone on the Sam Fox art program?
You should be completely fine. They said around 250 words but gave 500 so you were not limited, meaning if you were 490 then they will still read it and if it is awesome it is awesome. Mine was around 290 and I wish I read the part about not limiting the story because I for sure would have written more.
If you want to post your stats for ED 2023
http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/washington-university-st-louis/2110225-wash-u-ed-23-post-your-stats.html
I think I might ED II here if my parents say the finances could work out. Applying for PNP (Philosophy/Neuroscience/Psych). 88 UW GPA, very rigorous course load (full dual-enrollment, 4 AP/IB (most kids take about 6-10 by senior year - at least the top kids do), and all advanced math. 34 ACT, decent EC’s, blistering LOR’s, and probably okay essays.
88 UW GPA would equate to a 3.3, making WashU a reach.
I’m sort of looking forward to the tea leaves with everybody trying to figure out the exact date that ED decisions are going to be made. Speculating but 12/15 seems reasonable since decisions are usually announced on Friday around when finals start.
And may the odds be in your favor…
Last year they came out 12/14, which was a Thursday.
@Hamurtle Isn’t 12/15 a Saturday? I feel like decisions wouldn’t come out on a Saturday. Maybe 12/13 or 12/14?
My mistake-12/14 might be the possibile date since it’s the start of finals.
Last year, ED was released on 12/14. I remember that it was the latest ED release date by WashU in a couple of years.
when do ED decisions come out?
