Washington University in St. Louis 2023 ED2

Here’s a place to talk about Washu ED2.

Feel free to post stats, questions, and comments.

A couple quick questions. I was reading about the fee waiver and saw that if the total family income was less than $75 the fee could be waived. But on the Common App, it only asks if you have received a fee waiver from a special program or have received an email saying you got a fee waiver. So what should I do? And also, do we have to send official transcripts in or are the grades all self-reported on the application?

Does the ED2 pool tend to have people with higher stats? I’m lacking in that department a bit…

@clamchowder6 I’m not sure. I know that the majority of ED 2 applicants got deferred from their first choice and that the acceptance rate, especially for the schools that are harder to get into, is lower for ED2 than other options

It makes sense that the pool would have higher stats, because the recruited athletes and legacies would be in the ED1 pool, and the ED2 pool would have those who tried to get into reaches for ED1 and didn’t quite make it for whatever reason.

I would be surprised if the acceptance rate for ED2 was lower than for RD. My understanding is that acceptance rates are usually ED1 > ED2 > RD > Waitlist.

@Thea250

  1. Go to Common App > Profile > Common App Fee Waiver and select Yes.
  2. Select one of the options indicating why you need a fee waiver.
  3. Sign it and click Continue…

Hard to say what the ED2 acceptance rate will be like since this is the first time WashU is doing ED2.

Maybe we can extrapolate from similar schools that offer ED2, like Tufts or Vanderbilt, maybe?

Here’s an interesting discussion about ED1 vs ED2 at Vanderbilt. I’m guessing much of this same speculation could apply to Washu.

Most schools don’t break down their ED1 vs ED2 acceptance rates, but some do. NYT article from 2015 says:

======

For this year’s freshman class, Hamilton College accepted 42 percent of E.D. I applicants, and 32 percent of E.D. II applicants. The regular-decision pool was even more competitive, with 23 percent receiving offers. Pomona’s figures support the trend: It accepted 21 percent of applicants E.D. I, and 17 percent E.D. II. Regular-decision acceptance rate: 9 percent.

Last year at Washu, their ED acceptance rate was 42%, exactly the same as Hamilton in 2015. So maybe an educated guess would be ~30% for Washu ED2 this year?

Since ED2 candidates are generally stronger, the guess of ~30% acceptance rate is as good as any. I might even think it might be as low as 25%, since the ED2 candidates are lumped in together with the RD students and we’re talking about a stronger pool of students as mentioned above (ED/REA rejects from Ivies, Chicago, Vandy, Rice).

How are you guys sending your transcripts? I emailed them about it and they told me to have my counselor email it to them, so do I just have it sent to the admissions email, or is there somewhere else to send it?

@thea250, Your counselor will know what to do.

Should I get some sort of confirmation that I self-reported my scores? Because I thought I did, but I didn’t get any confirmation that I did and I’m a little worried I clicked ‘cancel’ instead of ‘submit’ on the WashU pathway. But the pathway also says that my “Early Decision II application for admission is complete! Please check back for important updates.” Thanks!

@CreativeName295 It sounds like it’s fine, but you can always reach out to your admissions officer to confirm. When you log in to the portal, your officer’s contact info is on the right.
Also, they have an application processor whose job is verifying checklists. The phone is (800) 638-0700.

That’s one of the things I like about Washu. They seem so organized and well run!

Does anyone know if we can change from RD to ED 2? Do we need to call and is anyone there this week?

I believe you need your HS counselor as well as your parents to sign off on the ED 2 decision. Will you be able to do that before January 2? I know there have been a lot of students changing to ED 2 after the first round of ED decisions. Good luck!

You need to contact your admissions officer. Your officer then emails you a form, which your parents and counselor must sign. Then you return the form.

When I self-reported I never got a confirmation so i submitted again. You won’t get confirmation (I am admitted ED1). Also the scores you self-report on the common app are sufficient (I asked my admissions officer)

What do you all think about my son’s chances?

Great stats
His essays and LORs are probably fine
Legacy (not direct parent or sibling, but related to an alumnus who’s very involved)
Full pay
His ECs are probably his weak spot. Just various clubs with a little bit of leadership. He didn’t do anything amazing, and he didn’t include a resume with his app.

I’m wondering if not submitting a resume was a mistake?

@elena719 anything more specific? GPA/test scores?
