Hi guys! I was waitlisted by WashU as a regular decision applicant? Do they just waitlist everyone who doesn’t get in automatically or are their qualifications to be waitlisted? Just wondering so I know where i stand in terms of chances of admission. Best of luck to everyone!
nope i got rejected so being waitlisted means they still want u but dont have space
Is it true they waitlist overqualified candidates. I had a 35 ACT, 4.0 uw, top 1% of class, and extremely amazing ECs that have gotten me great offers from other schools.
if you are overqualified, then they would just give you their merit scholarship to keep you at the school. I think Washu waitlist kids that need a lot of fin aid and/or do not demonstrate interest.
Many were denied - only some WL. There was letter on another forum to schools that said they reduced the WL 50% this year. My S has similar stats, so the theory that they are WL very high end students may have some merit. What % get offers from the WL??
My D’s guidance counselor says that WUSTL is commonly referred to as Waitlist U. In the past the school waitlisted a very large number of students and didn’t pull many from the list. Apparently WUSTL changed its approach this year and cut the wait list down substantially. Once spring break is over, I will ask my D’s guidance counselor to try to get some intel from the school about how many are on the list.
My son is from a very small rural public school in Illinois, and by small I mean my son had 24 students in his class. He had amazing test scores, 4.0, off the chart EC with three varsity sports, clubs, lead in musical, etc, and he had visited the football program and school three different times, but our school does not offer any AP classes. Anyway, he was waitlisted last year. We were told the chances of him getting off the waitlist were very, very small. So he committed to another school and football program, and May 1, he got a call saying he was off the waitlist. He had a week to commit to WashU. He committed. LOVES WashU, the football program, his roommates, classes and finished his first semester with straight A’s.
Did your son write a letter or show any further interest to Wash U after he was waitlisted? Or just claimed his spot in the waitlist and then received a call?
Since we are from such a small, poor, rural school, my husband did call to ask what more a student from that background could possibly do to gain acceptance. The dean promised to personally review his file.
My daughter got in off the waitlist today! She emailed her AO expressing her interest about two weeks ago. Today, she emailed a follow up because her first email received an out-of-office bounce back. Twenty minutes later she received a call offering her admission. They gave her until Tuesday to decide.
Congratulations! My son loves WashU!
Congrtats!! Which college/major she admitted? sorry, what stands for AO?
Thanks! AO = Admissions Officer. You can find them here: https://admissions.wustl.edu/apply_site/Pages/Admissions-Officers.aspx
She was admitted to the College of Arts and Sciences. I don’t think she selected a major.
My daughter got in today off the waitlist and was given until tomorrow morning at 10AM to decide whether or not she is interested in pursuing the waitlist, so exciting!!
Thank you! I thought it is a kind of Art Object…anyway: My son also sent his appeals to regional AO. Does anybody boy got in off the wait list to College of Arts and Sciences?
My daughter was waitlisted and she sent an email expressing interest and received an encouraging response but not an acceptance. We live far away and visiting the campus without knowing if she’s in is a challenge, both financially and for loss of work time. We have an appointment to visit Friday 5/5/17, but still no word from the school… Any suggestions from the peanut gallery on how to proceed?
Expressed interest does play a part in getting off the Waitlist, but you know what does more? Money.
My S has great stats, much like I’m seeing here, and got Waitlisted. But due to who he knows, and the amount of money that was donated to the school by those people (they were Wash U alumni), he had a private appointment with the Vice Provost of Admissions and a few others. Chances are, we’ll hear by the end of the week whether he got in or not.
There’s a life lesson here. As unfair and stupid as it is, “it’s not WHAT you know, it’s WHO you know.”
Well played with the “who” you know. Not really anything new to learn here, we just don’t carry that card in our deck. We discovered Washington University on an organic search of my daughter’s program interest. We’ll likely cancel the visit. I hope you receive good news Dnorbot and congrats to those who were rescued from waitlist purgatory
DD waitlist @WUSTL; 19k/yr scholarship @UofR; was easy decision
I’m not sure that “who you know” is the biggest factor. I was offered admission today off of the waitlist, and have no connections with WashU. I have been in contact with them since the waitlist came out back in March. I guess for those on the border “who you know” might matter, but for the majority it doesn’t appear to matter as much.
