WashU RD Class of 2023

DD accepted; GPA 4.0 UW, 4.24 W, 34 ACT, 1520 SAT - no merit and not enough need-based so that puts it at most expensive school so far. Not sure that it will make the cut unfortunately.

@ddelight Ivies dont give merit money. Do you mean she received financial aid totalling a free ride?

Just wanted to give my stats for future reference. I think knowing which stats AREN’T good enough is just as helpful as the stats that got people in.

DECISION: REJECTED
Decision Plan: Regular

Major: Education

OBJECTIVE:
-Unweighted GPA: 3.98 / 4

-Weighted GPA: 4.58 / 5

-That is about half my classes as honors or AP. All As except one B sophomore year.

-6 AP. 14 honors.

-My school does not rank, but I know that I am right around the top 10% of my class of 720.

-ACT: 36 (36, 36, 34, 36) One sitting.

-SAT II: None.

-AP Exams: Junior year was United States History (5), English Language (5) and Music Theory (5). Senior year will be Environmental Science, Psychology and Calculus AB.

-From large public school in a rather well-off community in suburban Midwest. Sends lots of students to top 30 schools and the likes. Female, white. At least one person from my school got in ED.

EXTRACURRICULARS:
-Top musician in state on my instrument, invited to state music education conference for two years in a row, honors ensembles both times. Played at regionals for three years, upward trend.

-Help out some of my teachers during my free period. I teach underclassmen, and I think I mentioned in my application that I want to go into education.

-Marching band section leader for three years, did marching band for four years, top concert band and orchestra for three years. Pit orchestra for three years.

-Two-time Camp NaNoWriMo winner. Wrote a novel in a month.

-No employment.

HONORS:
-National Honors Society, state commended, Top Scholar at school, AP Scholar, etc.

-Outstanding achievement in Spanish and physics junior year.

LETTERS:
-One letter of recommendation from United States History teacher. Could have been okay, or good, as she’s a strong writer but didn’t know me that well. (7/10)

-Other letter from my Spanish teacher who adored me! (9/10)

-Counselor was vouching for me. She’s also very articulate in her writing. (8/10)

ESSAYS:
-Common App essay was about regional and state music as mentioned above, about learning from mistakes/failure. It sounds a lot like a cliché “sports injury” story, except about dropping my instrument. (8/10)

-Supplement was about research on perfect pitch, a scientific and musical phenomenon. (9/10)

So I got rejected. Oh well. Congratulations if you got in, and good luck in the college search to everybody else!!

@xviiclassofxix Your stats were well within WashU’s range. It’s really hard to tell what goes on with admissions. I’m sure you’ll be amazing wherever you go

@xviiclassofxix Awesome!! What do you think made you not admitted? Did you show enough interest?

accepted  shocked but extremely happy! they mentioned “unique perspectives” and “entrepreneurial spirit” in my letter, not sure if that’s generic or unique? in any case, to those of you waitlisted or rejected, stay positive! it’s still early in decision relaying so there’s definitely more to come. wishing the best of luck to all of you!

@efang16 Congrats! What do you think made you unique among many excellent applicants?

S accepted
ACT 35.
GPA 4 uw
SAT II. 760 and 790
9 APs
Challenging course load
All As
Midwest
Top 15 national speech
. State theater award
Good ECs including leadership

Rejected
1580 SAT, 4.6 GPA, National Merit Finalist
No demonstrated interest

Waitlisted :frowning: This was my second choice so I’m pretty disappointed and worried. 35 ACT, 3.96 UW GPA, 6 AP exams so far, five 5’s and one 4, solid essays, great rec from my AP Calc teacher, applied to Environmental Bio major. Started a chapter of 350 and have hundreds of volunteer hours at the Botanical Garden and other solid ecology related extracurriculars. Also a cellist, okay with some honors but nothing spectacular. Had most of my leadership thru this. I interviewed, toured, and met my regional AO twice in person thru events. Not sure what I’m going to do now, but I definitely accepted my spot on the waitlist

D accepted
ACT 36
GPA 4 uw/4.4 w
No SAT II
11 APs
Ohio
NMF and Presidential Scholar candidate
Good ECs

any news/perks on the Business+CS program?

Accepted,
No financial aid. makes the decision very easy for me.

no, typo here, I meant full ride from other top 15 school and admission to one ivy.

Probably. D submitted the app and that was it. She applied to 12 schools. It was hard to do followups and displayed interest to individual school.

Denied:
34 ACT
3.4 uw / 3.9 weighted
Essay: not much effort
ECs: varsity soccer, referee, cashier, languages, some volunteering
Overall reaction: what I expected

DD accepted to McKelvey for biomedical engineering…she’s so excited!
36 ACT (all sections, one sitting), 4.0uw/4.75w, great rigor, school-level leadership and activities, hospital volunteer, babysitter. Nothing national level and no sports. Lots of interest…visited in November and absolutely loved the campus.
Best wishes to all, regardless of result - in the end, it’s not where you are but who you are

i didn’t received an email but i just checked the portal on my own. .anyone on the same boat?

D19 was also waitlisted. Lots of waitlisted folks on this thread. Sad since Wash U is my alma mater, and now neither D will attend. Oh well, suppose it wasn’t meant to be.

Denied:
ACT: 33 (35 superscore)
GPA: 3.78uw (my school doesn’t weight gpa but it would be significantly higher, all honors and AP classes)
good essays but very little demonstrated interest which I know WashU puts emphasis on
oh well! i was expecting rejection anyways so not a big deal
