WashU RD Class of 2023

My son was waitis waitlisted. 36ACT 4.0 UW GPA, 4.6 Weight GPA. No demonstrated interest at all. Good recomdation letters. National Merit Finalist, Extra Curriculars relate to Ballroom dance. He is a nationally competitive ballroom dancer and has won 3 National Championships. My guess is demonstrated interest is really important and if you have none it can make it difficult to get in. Wash U wasn’t one of his top choices and so he will not accept a place on the waitlist but good luck and congrats to all those who were accepted.

Does anyone know if there is a chat for accepted students??

waitlisted – 35 ACT, 6/730, 800s on 2 subject tests, 4.0 UW, 4.45 W, ECs were fine – nothing too special except for stem cell research and 2-year captain of 2 varsity sports (which is still pretty average)

Kinda bummed out bc i did a 2-week program at WashU, which I feel is a good way to express interest lol

Nervous about what’s to come in the next few weeks.

Accepted in College of Architecture. SAT 1550, 4.77 Weighted GPA, SAT II Math 2 800.

Accepted, from India, but won’t attend.

@singingbear thanks!! in terms of interest, i did a summer institute at WashU right before senior year, attended an information session + tour, and opted-in for an interview (although they cancelled it due to inclement weather). interest helps in my opinion, as my stats are otherwise on par with those i’m reading that were denied/waitlisted (number-wise, i’m nothing extraordinary: 34 ACT, 4.5/5 GPA, 8 APs, NMF).

what i think helped me to stand out aside from demonstrated interest were my essays, which were an honest representation of my life and way of thinking. i also started a nonprofit at my school that aligns with my passions and persisted in a varsity sport for four years.

moral of the story… interest matters, but also won’t make up for anything shoddy

General comments

My grades weren’t perfect. I had lots of high 80’s/ low 90’s. However, I showed them that I am different and that’s what matters!

I could be wrong… but looking at stats, it seems that WashU waitlisted many well qualified applicants whom WashU believes they wouldn’t attend. This practice has become more common so colleges can protect their reputation and yield rate. In the past, yield rate can affect colleges’ rankings, not so sure if it is still being factored in. Anyway, low yield rate is bad for colleges. This practice is not fair for applicants, but good for colleges.

My son was rejected, RD for Engineering
We visited over the summer at an Engineering Days. Loved the school. I didn’t know to schedule an interview, so my bad. No time to revisit to interview.

Waitlisted here!
ACT: 34 (35 superscore)
GPA: 4.0 UW
Demonstrated Interest: Attended WashU Preview
Thoughts: Honestly I didn’t vibe with the school when I visited so I’m not too disappointed. Declined my spot on the WL so hopefully someone else can be bumped up later on!!

@homerdog ya I can see how that can be annoying. I’m sorry for not being as considerate as I could have been. I am extremely grateful for my offer, it’s just financially out of reach.

@homerdog Sorry. Perhaps that’s insensitive and too soon. I don’t know what their waitlist practices are myself, but some (like us) probably knew a few weeks ago when the merit was announced that it wasn’t an option.

It’s just too bad. S19 didn’t apply but he had friends that did. Full pay friends who were way at the top of the class with NMF, big ECs, the whole nine yards. Wash U usually takes 15 or so from out school but not his year. And these kids would have gone. Wash U’s loss.

Is Wash U that bad with financial aid? I don’t ever see other threads where kids get their decisions and on the same day say they aren’t going.

I’m sorry but one more thing. Are you all saying that their big scholarship was announced weeks ago and then kids kept their apps there knowing they wouldn’t go? Davidson has a big full scholarship and they do the right thing. They send an email out to the kids who didn’t get it and ask them to be honest and withdraw their app is they won’t be able to attend without the merit. Wash U should do the same thing.
