WashU @ StL: Desperate and Needy?

What do you think of WUSTL's marketing and admissions tactics?

(I have my thoughts. But since I can't say anything nice, I won't say anything at all.)

Your constant attempts at ■■■■■■■■ are rapidly getting annoying. There are other sites better for your efforts.

Thank you!

Sending mail to students is terrible! We should instead use that money to build a minigolf course in the chancellor’s house to go with the bowling alley. And maybe a rollercoaster. We don’t have one of those yet.

Also, the name of the school is Washington University IN St. Louis. Evidently you haven’t been overexposed to the advertising.

A roller coaster would do wonders for WUSTL’s low yield rate. I like your suggestion.

As far as admissions tactics go, it’s the most obnoxious thing to see a student so appalled at the fact that he or she got waitlisted from WashU, when clearly he/she expected 100% to be accepted with a full ride and everything. I mean, come on people, we’re not talking about your state university here, this is a private institution that has joined the ranks of the best universities. You can’t possibly believe anything is guaranteed. And for those people who still think WashU has “Tufts Syndrome”, I think that HYPSM all do the same thing but because they’re the most elite and selective, “tufts syndrome” on their level is simply overlooked. There’s a kid in my state who was a presidential scholar and got into all the ivies but waitlisted at stanford, while 5 kids from another school who are clearly no better in any aspect got in at Stanford. That was by far the worst example of tufts syndrome I have ever seen, so people really need to stop picking WashU out as the sole university to use “admissions tactics” when almost every university (in some way, shape or form) does the exact same thing. WashU being a DIII school also recruits much fewer athletes than other large DI schools such as stanford, but is stanford criticized for using “admissions tactics”…no…it’s just how college is nowadays, trying to emphasize sports, diversity (ethnic and economical).

Also, the blunt truth is that not many people have heard of WashU and to simply spread the word through cheap mailings is not considered desperate in anyone’s book (at least anyone who knows how to run a university). Basically what you’re saying is, if you were in charge of a university who had the facilities of other top schools but nowhere near the prestige, you wouldn’t want to send mailings to thousands of qualified applicants because you don’t want your school to sound desperate.

Don’t give him bait until he designs a rollercoaster for us. Rollercoaster Tycoon files only - no SimCoaster or whatever.

You try to justify WUSTL’s questionable tactics because your school lacks prestige. Guess what? Schools do not start out being prestigious or become prestigious overnight. They earn their prestige over time by coming up with amazing discoveries, making notable contributions to society and producing accomplished graduates.

So why doesn’t WUSTL try earning its prestige instead of trying to sucker naive high schoolers into thinking that it’s prestigious? Your ridiculous amounts of junk mail do not earn you any respect, let alone prestige.

FWIW, WUSTL has been around longer than Stanford, MIT and Caltech. So your school has had plenty of time to develop prestige. The fact that WUSTL doesn’t have any suggests that it hasn’t done anything to deserve it.

Haha! I loved Rollercoaster Tycoon…unfortunately I didn’t save/reinstall the program when I upgraded my computer.

Washington University is considered so “overrated” that it is underrated now. It is a very fine institution. I do not understand the opposition to a school striving to succeed. Progression is inevitable, so you might as well embrace it.
