WashU v. Duke v. G-town

so i'm basically down to these three schools. at the moment, i have no preference for one over another.

if you were in my place, which would you choose to go to and why?

Georgetown. Because I don’t like Duke, and it’d be more fun than WashU.

Personally, I would recommend Georgetown, but that’s because I attended a Jesuit high school, and a great number of my friends are enrolled there. Great metropolitan location (internships and cultural opportunities), exceedingly prestigious (among Roman Catholics and the wealthy), strong alumni network.

I had never heard of WashU until my junior year of high school, when we began heavily researching institutions, and I’m still not sure what’s so great about it, besides its USNWR ranking.

Duke is an outstanding and prestigious school too, great alumni network. But, their drunken-orgy scene is depressing to me.

Duke. It has great weather, a beautiful expansive campus, party-hard and study hard people, and excels in far more areas than Georgetown (which is probably only renowned for SFS and MAYBE business…lol).

WUSTL would be a close second.

However, if you just want to enjoy life and have fun and stuff, maybe you should give Georgetown a hard look. I think Duke is the best here though.

Duke. Great town, great campus, great people.

Though I’m biased because I don’t know much about the others.

I’m a student in the same school peer group (elite private/lower Ivy) and I’d have to say Duke, wasn’t a big fan of WUSTL or Georgetown

Come on - not another “which school is best” post.

collegeboundp:

No one can offer meaningful advice without knowing more about what you’re looking for - your academic interests, social interests, city/suburban/rural preferences . . . . .

NONE of these 3 schools will be “best” for all comers.

So, what are you looking for?

WashU for pre-med.

While Washington University is in close proximity to the world famous National Bowling Hall of Fame, I think the cultual life in Washington with the Smithsonian and Kennedy Center is better, so I would recommend Georgetown.

Durham is a great town? Did you ever leave the campus at Duke?

Duke is the most popular education wise…

More people know the name than wustl or georgetown.

When I think of Georgetown I think of their basketball team first although they are a good school.

Duke, I think of their great academics and basketball team.

Wustl is a great school, but you wont get much recognition for it if you plan to go far from St. Louis

"Wustl is a great school, but you wont get much recognition for it if you plan to go far from St. Louis "

From many people, you’re probably right. But for the heads of companies/people who will be hiring you, all of them know Wash U at this point.

Did you get into them yet? That always helps…

Actually roblan, when I think Georgetown, most people think International Relations and internships in the State Department. KMany also think excellent Law School placement. Georgetown isn’t a Basketball school. Georgetown has been solid but not great in Basketball for the last 20 years.

To the OP, academically, all three schools are brilliant. We are talking about three universities that are ranked between #6 and #20 in the US…out of over 1,000 universities. Georgetown is strong in International Relations and Business. Duke is strong in the Life Sciences and in the Social Sciences and the Humanities. Both of those schools have excellent Law school and professional placement track records. WUSTL is particularly strong in the Life Sciences.

If you intend on going on to Law School or if you would like to hit the corporate world when you graduate, I would recommend Duke OR Georgetown. If you are interested in the sciences or if you are premed, I would recommend Duke OR WUSTL.

Once you have narrowed it down according to major, I recommend you visit the two schools that are still standing and go with the school where you think you would be happiest.

well i’ve been accepted to WUSTL so far

i’ll be in the business school there and applied to the business school in georgetown. at duke, i’d probably major in econ

There are better cities in NC (Asheville, Carrboro/CH, Wilmington), but Durham definitely has its spots. Have you even been to North Carolina, rjkofnovi?

I’d choose WUStL or Duke, personally. WUStL has an excellent quality of life with up and coming academics, and Duke offers pretty much the whole package. Georgetown has nothing the other two don’t do better, except its location in DC.

They are all great schools, probably equal in prestige (although Duke is more nationally recognized)

I think it comes down to what you want to study and what social scene you like. I visited Gtown and hated it (granted, it was a humid 105 degrees and my tour guide was clad in Chanel and LV head to toe, which freaked me out a little) Gtown also seems focused on poly sci, and is ranked lower than the others. But of course I’m biased by a terrible sunburn. Duke probably has the best econ program (I wrote my essay about it) but if you want only business, Olin is great.

^I think people exaggerate the “drunken-orgie scene” at Duke. There are parties everywhere, and Duke just gets a bad rap due to bball, frats, and that lax scandal. I got into wustl too, but Duke seems more fun and its math/science programs are killer. Again, though, they’re both great schools and you should pick the one that fits you best.

For Business, McDonough has a slight edge over Olin. If admitted, I would focus on Georgetown and Duke.

Definitely Georgetown, but that’s because it’s my dream school and am insanely jealous of anyone that can get in there. The business is great. Duke would be a close second though. You are extremely lucky to have a choice between those two great schools.

“For Business, McDonough has a slight edge over Olin. If admitted, I would focus on Georgetown and Duke.”

Just wondering where you’re getting this insight from. Businessweek has Olin at 16th and McDonough at 24th. I know Olin is 13th in USNews, and McDonough is not in the top 10, so I’m assuming Olin is ranked better (although McDonough could be 11 or 12).
