first time poster. Don’t mind them.

I was talking to someone in admissions who told me they offered fewer freshmen admittance than last year and were intending to use the waitlist. He said as of last week admission acceptances were up based on their projections, but they won’t know until May 1st.

That’s still speculation. Personally, I believe that WUSTL won’t be needing their waitlist because all the top 20 school had lower admit rates. That means if there were people aspiring higher than WUSTL (HYPMS) then they might have not gotten in. As a result, their second choices may come down to WUSTL. More kids applied to top schools and more got rejected, being a similar school of caliber, they could have either gotten accepted or waitlisted. The one who got accepted may enroll at WUSTL instead.

^I agree. If they do accept from the wait list (and I’d guess the probability of this is less than 5%), it’ll certainly be no more than 50 people, which again is probably 1% of the waitlist.

i.e. you probably have a 1 in 2000 chance of getting in on the waitlist (obviously highly generalized, but my point is to illustrate the unlikelihood).

so here’s the question: do they let you know right away if they don’t need the waitlist? If enough people accept the offer of admission, then do the waitlist kids receive notification on, say, the 2nd or something? Or do they wait a bit to let you know to maximize the pain?

They’ll let people they accept off the waitlist know right away. As for the others (almost everyone), it’ll probably be a month or so later (I’m not 100% sure they even let people know that don’t make it in).

Assume you don’t get in, no worth waiting etc. If you happen to do, it’s a nice surprise. If you don’t, well there’s no point letting yourself on for months.

no no i knew that already. The question is whether–in the event that they literally DO NOT USE THE WAITLIST AT ALL–they then let you know that it isn’t going to happen right away. I get that if they pull some people, the others won’t know for a while, but if Washu is certain as of May 1 that no one is getting in off the waitlist, will they let us all know quickly?

Like I said, they will only let people they accept in right away. They will not tell people that don’t get in right away (which obviously includes everyone if they don’t use the waitlist at all).

Furthermore, May 1st is the deadline to send in deposits. At which point they have to count through them, look at who accepted, and determine if a wait list is needed. This process will take say 2 weeks. Then if they do decide to accept, they have to look through the wait list apps again, which will take another 2-4 weeks.

You won’t find out if you got in, didn’t get in, or if the waitlist was used until mid June at the earliest. They aren’t in a rush to tell people they didn’t get in, or the waitlist wasn’t needed.

The simple solution would be to look through old threads from last year and see when people found out the waitlist wasn’t being used.

I’m far too lazy to do that, so go have fun.

Just reread an email from an adcom & anyone accepted off waitlist should know by end of May.

Do you think they will know if they are accepting students off the waitlist in general by May 2nd?

Colleges only inform people if they got off the waitlist in early June (sometimes late May)…just look at threads from last year. Wash U might know already…doesn’t mean they’ll let anyone else know for another 4 weeks ;p

There is no guarantee that WUSTL will be using the waitlist this year (hence the OP was really misleading in his/her post). WUSTL wants a smaller class size AND this year’s admissions was one of the most competitive yet in college admissions history. Some students who were accepted to WUSTL may have not gotten into their dream school, and vice versa. The people who view WUSTL as a top college choice and did not get into a more selective school (HYPSM) will probably go to WUSTL.

I heard some schools like Columbia inform the waitlist students by May 7th, then another wave comes May 14th. Then after that, they will inform the stragglers

I’m on the waitlist and reading through these comments, it’s almost like we’re marionettes and WashU is a puppeteer that loves to see its subjects squirm. I wish it didn’t have that much power over me, but it does. Hope is a terrible thing.

Don’t single out WashU as the puppeteer. I have 2 friends at Vanderbilt who got in off of the waitlist. One of them was notified in late June and the other at the end of July.

It’s a trickle down issue…D is holding a spot somewhere else that someone is wailtisted, and that person could be holding a spot…If anyone hears anything PLEASE post here!

I got a call today around 4 offering me a spot in the fall. But by the time I got off the phone with Admissions to contact the FA office, it was already closed. So now I only have 24 hours to accept my spot, but I have no idea how much financial aid(presumably very little) they would offer me.

But at least they contact me early, good luck to all my fellow waitlisters out there.

cprep: what shcool did u apply to/what major did u indicate? I wonder what the trend is at the moment

The College of Engineering. I believe I marked Undecided Engineering if that was an option. If not, it was Mechanical
