Wasn't accepted into UMCP...

I was not accepted into University of Maryland College Park which was the only school I could actually afford. A lot of people have been telling me that my mistake was that I applied directly to the Architecture program. Apparently, I would have a higher chance of getting in if I applied to Liberal Arts and then transferred later on. I am considering appealing, any advice?

If you can afford UMCP, then you can afford UMBC or Towson.

There are plenty of options for affordable colleges. You could always apply again or go to a community college and then transfer to college park the next year.

“A lot of people have been telling me that my mistake was that I applied directly to the Architecture program.”

Those people are incorrect, I’m sorry to say. The applications are reviewed by the University itself first. IF the University chooses to offer you admission, THEN your application goes to the LEP for consideration. That’s why you see many posts about being accepted to the University but not the LEP majors…

MomTeacherNurse and Shanice are right to point out other affordable schools as well as the option of another route via community college and reapplying to UMD as a transfer.

Best of luck in whatever you decide.

“If you can afford UMCP, then you can afford UMBC or Towson.” Actually, I thought this originally, but after my dad did the fin. aid calculator, UMBC came out to be too expensive for us, more than college park for some reason.

I know that UMBC and Towson application deadlines have passed, so I’m hoping you applied to those schools already. I would consider appealing as a last resort. If all else fails, then I agree with the community college option. Don’t see it as a death sentence… I have friends who got into some GREAT Maryland schools last school year, but couldn’t afford them and ended up at Howard Community College or Montgomery Junior College. They’re doing well and are on their way to a better school in 1-2 years.
