Appeal UMCP Admission Decision

I wasn't accepted to UMCP even though I apply by the Priority Deadline for Fall 2009 and I am an in-state resident and have a learning disability. How can I appeal(overturned) UMCP's admission decision? How can I do that? What will this do for my learning disability? My counselor only talk a little bit about my LD in the recommendation.

I don't believe there is an appeal process. All I can suggest is ither try taking night courses at UMD or go full time to another school and reapply. I don't know what your LD is, but it should have no effect on it.

Don't expect to get into college because you have a learning disability. Colleges aren't going to accept you just because you have a disability. theyll accept you if you have shown that you can overcome it.

Your stats are below Marylands averages, so a rejection should not have come as a surprise.

Out of curiosity, what kind of disability is it? I read somewhere that you had a pretty decent gpa but a low SAT. Dunno if there is such a thing as a test anxiety LD? Maybe...

I came for a suprise to me!

it is a learning disability- a combination of reading, math, and writing. Along with processing information

Can I reapply to UMCP after my freshman year at another insitution?

Sure, you can apply as a transfer student. Maybe you should consider a year at a community college to show them that you can handle college courses?

Well, I am applying to other colleges in Maryland, and I want the credits to transfer to UMCP. The community college is my alternative if i don't get accept any of my schools. How can I transfer after my freshman year to go to UMCP?

My son was an LD kid. I REALLY don't recommend Maryland if you have any LD. They are not known for giving good support for LD kids. You might want to get Peterson's "Colleges with programs for students with learning disabilities." We felt that the best schools for LD supports were Fairleigh Dickenson in NJ, and Adelphi in NY. However, the guide, and investigate the suggested schools .

I borrow that book in the library multiple times.

How can I transfer to UMCP after my freshman year of college? UMCP deadline for Fall Transfer admission is : March 1: for Early Application and June 1st. Can I apply for Fall 2010? What should I do and how should I do this?

I'd recommend that you talk to your counselor at school about your predicament provided that you have a counselor

I have a counselor and I will tell the counselor about it.

Yes, you can apply for fall 2010. That EA decison right now is for Fall 09. SO you would complete at least 1 semester before applying for 10. I would suggest that you also attend school during the summer so you can have 2 semesters under your belt to prove you can handle it.

You should realize with an LD, as a freshman or even a sophomore most of the classes that you will attend for core reqs will have very large classes(200) and then subsetted into a class taught by a TA, unless it is validated. I suggest that you take those courses ta the CC during summer, fall and spring next yr, so you won't face that come fall 10. I would also suggest taking more courses next summer, clear it with UMD to see what is transferable. If you carry even 12 credits, spring and fall, and then 6 (2 classes) each summer, you would actually be ahead of those entering in 09. Plus you will be in smaller classes which will make your LD issue less of a hindrance, and UMD might feel more comfortable in accepting you knowing that you will be in smaller courses.

The more courses you take and carry a good gpa (try for nothing less than a B) the more they can see you handling the course load at UMDCP. I know it seems unfair that you are rejected, but in honesty, they want to see everybody succeed, it just came down to them seeing the others being more successful. Success to them is not being put on academic probation. Many people here have excellet gpas, but college is not just about attending a class and taking tests...it is about everything. Asimulation into a large campus with large classes can be very difficult. SOme kids believe well I can miss this class because there are 250 students in the class, they won't notice me missing...little do they know, that is the time the prof usually will teach/say something that is very simple to get, but will never talk about it again until you see it on the midterm. Miss the class and you will get it wrong. I know with DS, all of his friends had just as high gpa/SAT as he did, he went to all of them and pulled high B or A, they skipped a couple of the big classes and got C's
GOOD LUCK

Yes; I am planning on taking some summer courses over the summer probably at the community college, but after that I want to transfer from a 4-yr college to UMCP. I am going to try an get a good, strong gpa. Can I still transfer after my freshman year of college?

You can transfer up to your sr yr, however UMDCP will only accept a certain amt of credits, and sometimes certain courses are not transferable. I can't answer which ones since I don't know. I suggest contacting admissions or the dept for the major you would like to attend to find out what they will accept and what they won't. SInce you are IS, chances are they will accept the majority of your classes...mainly because UMD is state and cc's are feeders for state universities

what does IS stands for?

...In State
