Wasn't notified of debt

So I year back I was going to college for comp science but I dropped all my classes once I realised all of their programs were roughly 15-20 years out of date. I had a student loan that was supposed to cover the debt and when I left I was under the impression the student loan covered it all because they told me some of it went back. I’ve been paying my student loan on time. A year later after I’ve moved I start getting calls from a debt collector and come to find out I owed them an additional 1100 dollars! Never sent me any letters for the whole 6 months before I moved and never emailed or called me. I called them and asked why I owe them that and they said its because I didn’t finish my classes. Any suggestions? Is my best course just to pay it?

Was your bill to the college paid in full? If not, it’s very possible you owe them money.

What was the cost? And what was the amount of the student loan you had?

Do you have proof that you dropped in time. There are usually 3 periods of a drop cycle. The first is drop with no consequence. The 2nd is drop with a 10%(usually) price penalty drop. And the third is a drop with various grading and price penatlies.

My loan was 5500 and they prorated my second semester because I only attended for for a week or 2. It was around 3500 though. I’ll have to check when I get home. I don’t have proof of when I dropped however. I don’t even remember when it was. It was around a year ago.

You need proof. Start looking for it.

If you drop your classes, the school has to do a Return of Title IV funds calculation. You only earned 2 weeks worth of your loan - the school was required to return the amount you were given but did not earn. You would then have owed the school … is it the school that has you in collections for non-payment? The school may well have contacted you through your student email address (as they are supposed to do) - is it possible they did & you weren’t reading the emails from them?
