I am starting my senior year of high school and have been thinking of colleges, what I want to study, etc. I really enjoy Biology/Biochemistry and things related to health. I have two colleges in mind, SLU and Mizzou. SLU has an accelerated BS/masters for Public health but Mizzou doesn't. If I go to Mizzou I would study Biochemistry, and eventually grad school. After reading about all the bad job opportunities and bad pay for a BS in Biochemistry,I can't decide which to go with. SLU is a lot more expensive than Mizzou is. So my question is, would it be worth paying the extra money to go to SLU or should I not worry about getting a degree in Biochemistry and go to Mizzou?

Honestly, the money sucks, but at least at my school Public Health and Biochem are pretty much two totally different things. If the price to SLU you are considering includes the Masters, I would say go for it. I don’t think the price should matter too much here.

Public Health is more about the government/administration/epidemic kind of deal. A little more of a “worldly” and a “societal” aspect of health whether Biochem, well, that answers itself. Just think about whether or not which one is more appealing because they really are very different.

Thanks for the input! I think I’m going to go with what I enjoy more, which is Biochemistry! I haven’t completely decides yet, but I would want to go pharmacy school also. Have you heard about job prospects for pharmacists?

Pharmacy job prospects are not much better than with a biochemistry BSc to be honest… but if an accelerated PharmD is for you, St. Louis College of Pharmacy is perhaps the school to shoot for.

I’m researching STLCOP currently and I am definetly consider it! I think I’ve decided now that I want to be a pharmacist. They even are starting a program where after three years of undergrad/pre-pharm you get a BS in Health Sciences. I think I’m going to go with that in case Pharmacy school doesn’t work out, but I’m sure I’ll be fine, since I enjoy the topics that much!
