^ Does it matter? Just don't plagiarize...

We don't currently do that.

Hi, I was just wondering that what is the maximum amount of majors/minors you can pursue at Chicago? I know Chicago requires all kinds of courses to be taken by its undergraduate, but how about if someone wants to pursue major studies in more than two or three subjects?

thx.

Hi Libby, I am currently a sophomore majoring in economics studying in a top public college in the midwest. I am planning to transfer to University of Chicago for the fall 2006 semester. And i have 2 questions:

For the deadlines, will I have a higher chance if I apply through the early alternative option? or is it just a matter of deadline?

I am planning to apply to be an economics major at UChicago, in which I know competition is tough. Will I have a higher chance of admission if I applied for a less-competitive major? And then do an internal major change?

Thanks,

There is no max to the number of majors and minors. A few years ago I saw a guy named Cesar graduate with five, including a master's degree in public policy and three with honors. Then later I learned that he spent eight years here...

The chances for transfers are the same with each deadline. Also, we don't ask for a major. Don't ask, don't tell if you're worried you'll be place in stiffer competition. But you should also know that we don't judge applicants based on the number of "slots" available in each major. That's because none of the majors have quotas. We could have a thousand econ majors, or ten.

My Dearest Libby,

I love UofC and it will be my first choice school next fall. The only problem is my school offers very few honors courses and no APs. Of our schools paltry selection of "college courses" through our local community college, I am taking as many as possible. I try to keep busy and challenge my self academically as much as possible. I take 9 classes a 9-period day (no lunch) and still manage to maintain a 4.0 gpa. Will Chicago hold the fact that I haven't taken APs against me or will they realize that I have taken advantage of all of the academic opportunities available to me? The curricula of the college classes that are school offers is roughly similar to the AP courses. Should I consider taking some AP tests even though our school doesn't offer them?

Thank You!
David

P.S. how is the "Fundamentals: Issues and Texts" major? It sounds very intriguing.

I'd like to know about this as well. :)

See this: http://collegecatalog.uchicago.edu/archives/catalog02-04/23-NCD-FNDL-02.pdf concerning Fundamentals: Issues and Texts. This may also be of interest: http://maroon.uchicago.edu/news/articles/2005/04/19/professors_spotlight.php

Fundamentals factored heavily into my decision to apply to Chicago. It sounds awesome.

Libby,
I have been accepted to UChicago and, at this point in time, plan on enrolling. Before I make my decision, I would like to read more about the Pritzker early acceptance program, as it may have some impact on my final decision, but have not been able to find much information on it. I was wondering if you could direct me to or provide me with any information regarding the details of the program, specifically statistics surrounding the admissions process.

Thanks

Libby- final grades, how bad do I have to do to get rescinded?

also, I was admitted EA and never got a holiday card-is this because Chicago does not like me as much as other EA applicants?

iloveschool, do you really think that this is true?

Of course not, but I am interested in your criteria for rescinding offers of admissions. I'll be more specific if need be

How bad do our final grades have to be for us to get rescinded? Like how easy or hard is it to get rescinded?

It's pretty hard for your offer to get rescinded, but if you were planning on doing anything foolish with your life, please wait until after July 1 to do it.

From Libby's U of C blog on blogspot.

Hi Libby!

i have a question about our online midyear report thing

"I have a grade point average of ( )
on a grading scale maximum of ( )"

If your gpa is like umm 5.0 (weighted) and it's out of 4.0

do we need to put our gpas like this....

"I have a grade point average of ( 5.0 )
on a grading scale maximum of ( 4.0 )" ????????????????????????

Yes, that sounds about right.

How much does "demonstrated interest" count in the admissions process? I haven't had a chance to visit Chicago yet, but based on what I know, it's one of my top choices. I came to the info session at my high school, but didn't have an interview because I somehow didn't realize you had to request one. Would it be a good idea for me to visit Chicago in mid-February, or am I better off waiting until I know if I'm accepted? Would taking the initiative to visit (I'd fly out alone from DC) be a good way to show my (very genuine) interest -- or conversely, if I neither visit nor interview, am I at risk for not being considered a "serious" enough applicant?

Maybe I'm worrying unnecessarily, but I don't want to be mistaken for someone who isn't really invested in Chicago, because that couldn't be farther from the truth.

problem: my freshman year, the highest GPA possible (weighted) was a 5, but that was only for an AP. So with only honors classes my freshman year, my GPA was around a 4.5 out of a possible 4.8 or so for my honors bracket. Then. my junior year, they changed the weighted AP scale to being out of 6, and my freshman and sophomore GPAs were not recalculated to this standard, so my total cumulative GPA is around 4.7, which is skewed because of this

Libby,

I'm applying as a transfer student for the University of Chicago. One of the main reasons for transferring is due to the fact that I want to switch majors. If I put on my application that my prospective major is Economics, will I be penalized for having only humanities/foreign language my first semester of college(due to my old major)? I'm taking more math/econ this semester and I took math/science/econ AP's before in high school and did fairly well on the exams.

Thanks,
Ryan
