Demonstrated interest - we understand that not everyone can visit. If it's there, we take it into account, but if it's not, there are many reasons.

Don't worry so much about your GPA. Worry about your curriculum.

We don't ask for prospective major on the application. We just want to see liberal arts classes from transfer applicants, if you can take them.

Hi Ms. Libby, could you please enlighten me on how my situation might be interpreted during my application next fall (I understand that it is difficult to say without full detail). during high school I went from an average student (9) to an excellent student(10).Late into my sophomore year my mother was diagnosed with Lung Cancer. It has taken a heavy toll on my junior gpa. I don't want to make excuses, but, after honest self-reflection, I must admit I was struggling emotionally. Half-way through the semester I struggled with the fact that my mother almost died, and my grades heavily reflect this. Since my mother has recovered, and, my grades are now all A's. I have always carried a heavy courseload and don't plan on giving up anytime soon. I feel like I'm back in the game, but, I also understand what is done is done. U of C is my top choice and I'm confident in being a reasonably strong contender (save for that semester). If you could, please inform me what would be the wisest way to communicate this in my application and how the university will approach this. It would be in my definite interest to demonstrate my senior year performance next year so should I still apply to EA? Thanks very much for your time and advice.

nobodyknows - explain that in the app, preferably not in an essay, but in a separate attached sheet. Explain this to your counselor as well, so that he or she can give an impression of how it affected your schoolwork.

My son, a high school Junior, is putting together his schedule for next year. He'll be taking 3 AP classes and one honors class plus taking calc 2 at the local college. 2nd semester will be the same, except 4 AP's instead of 3. This leaves him with 2 study halls first semester and one second semester. In light of the heavy load of course work, as a parent, I think the study halls are a good thing, enabling him to find some balance in his life. On the other hand, my son thinks that having study halls might make him look like a slacker, even though nothing could be further from the truth.

So, wise ones, what do admissions counselors think of study halls?
Thanks.

I know you can't speak for all adcoms, but if a student is planning on attending another school, but has had school reports and teacher recs sent to you, should he contact you to let you know he's not applying after all or would that cause more trouble than it's worth?

Hi Libby. I applied to UChicago early decision, and I have two questions for you.

I realized that amid the stress and chaos of applying to colleges, I didn't send in my new SAT scores that were 200 points higher than the previous scores. Can I still send those in, or is it too late?

In my freshman year of high school, I recieved 5 days of OSS for cheating. It was definitely my fault and I fully take the blame, but will it affect my chances for getting into UChicago significantly?

Libby , I am an international student. I have applied to U of C RD. However because of the unavailability of the seats I was only able to take the test in January 13, which is beyond the deadline mentioned in the website. I have listed U of C for the official scores to be sent. Will you consider these scores while evaluating my application? Or, is there anything else that I should/can do?

Hi, Libby! (I'm sorry if this is a stupid question.) My report card came out yesterday, but I didn't want to miss the Feb. 1 deadline for the midyear report, so I put in the grades I had before my finals. Does it matter if those grades are a little off by a - ? It just seems nitpicky, but if it makes a difference...! I also accidentally had my transcript sent to the school, though I also self-reported it. Is that okay? Thanks so much and sorry!

I have been getting straight As since my freshmen year. But I kinda messed up junior yr. I still have my final exam left. And two exams of senior yr before I apply. I am an international student. Do I stand a chance?

Libby, If a teacher has not sent in her recommendation do you still start reviewing a student's application or does it just sit until all required parts of the application have arrived?

hey libby... i actually just had a quick question that i coulnd't find on the website

if i get accepted to UofC, would i be allowed to defer for one year before entering as a freshmen, or do u require that if i announce acceptance that i enroll in the next fall quarter?

My S received a letter asking him if he would like to defer admission for a year and that Chicago would be happy to hold his spot. So the answer is, yes, one can definitely take a year before attending.

If you are asking Libby, which is what is typical done on this thread, she does not do "chances." There is really no realistic way for anyone else to provide that either.

I know it's preferable to complete four years in science, but I have taken the three "basics" (biology, chemistry, and physics), and am dropping science my senior year so I can take two history classes that I'm really passionate about. Could this potentially be an issue?
