Anyone else watch these videos and feel COMPLETELY inadequate/like a slacker? I HOPE I eventually take 3 or 4 AP exams TOTAL, these students are taking 5 in a single academic year! My current GPA is 3.35, no guarantee it stays that high. I’m also NOT an athlete (I’m chubby, and okay with that)
you should stop watching that stuff and start improving your academics and extracurriculars
First of all, there are millions of high school students graduating, and very few vloggers - they are not even close to representing what 95% of high school students are doing.
Second of all, there is nobody out there providing fact checks for the Vlogs. You can make one yourself and say whatever you want.
Third, the average GPA of graduating high school students is around 3.0, so you are ahead of the curve.
Finally, don’t focus on what other students are maybe doing or not doing. Decide what you want to do, and go for it. Focus on doing your best, and on finding your own path.
@rexbert12 is right - instead of watching some annoying teenager blab on about all the things they are doing, spend your time doing something like studying or engaging in whatever extracurricular activity interests you.
Thanks for putting it in perspective @MWolf! I know I’m the rule, and these folks are the exception, which is how they’re getting views to begin with.
Do you think my academics and EC are below average?! For the type of schools they apply for, sure, but NOT generally.
I don’t think he means you are below average. I think it is more like you should always try to better yourself. Whether you are an all A student or an all C student, there is always room to grow. So if you feel inadequate, then try your best to improve your stats and extracurriculars, and at the very least, you will feel satisfied that you tried your best.
Yeah, I was probably being hypersensitive.
just the fact that you are chubby should bother you a bit the rest is fine…also depends on where you are applying:)
I mentioned the chubby part because I’m NOT an athlete (like many who post vlogs). I definitely know where I apply matters. Hopefully eventually a more ordinary student posts such a video.
The truly high-performing students I know… at least before this pandemic hit… there is little chance they would even have time or the inclination to post a Vlog. They’re motivated by things other than complete strangers’ opinions of them (with a possible exception if the stranger happens to be a selective college admissions officer). So yes… the complete lack of fact checking means you’re wasting your time. But if you insist on watching anyway, at least take them with a large grain of salt.
@Groundwork2022 I initially started because they seemed interesting and fun. I find it interesting you think they’re exaggerating their accomplishments. But TBH, I hadn’t considered the quarantine being a factor in their proliferation.
I’ve noticed something watching them: they applying to specific majors. Talking to my dad, he hadn’t heard of that (he was in college in the 90s). Is that a new thing? My dad knew what he wanted to study m but didn’t specifically mention it in his applications.
Watching videos, they talk about “the portal”. Can someone explain it to me like I’m a toddler?
