Way for Teens to be Active in Politics

As the title suggests, what are some ways I can get involved in local/state politics? I’ve contacted a local Democratic Party leader and a candidate for one of my state’s House of Representatives seats. As of now, I haven’t had very many volunteer opportunities, but I would like to see that change in the future. If anyone has an advice, tips, etc I would love for the help! Thanks!

It’s an election year. Sign up to knock on doors, make phone calls, etc. See if there is a Results group in your area.

If there are any races on a local level, contact those candidates about volunteering! I’m working on a local city council campaign and I absolutely love it. If not city council there are probably other races going on that you could volunteer for.

Go to a city council meeting. Observe for the first meeting, then see if there are any committees that interest you. If so, then go to the meetings and inquire if there is any way for you to volunteer.

You can also see if there are any state or national campaigns you want to volunteer for. In high school I volunteered for a Lt. Governor’s (successful) congressional campaign. It involved a lot of flyering and calling. You can also look into volunteering with advocacy non profits or an actual party. Simply find one you like ([Volunteer Match](https://www.volunteermatch.org/) is great for this), sign up to help out, and follow through.

Our county Democratic party has a separate branch for teens (and one for seniors). If your’s doesn’t, ask about starting one. Or at least volunteer to help the party. They can also use people to pass out flyers, answer phones, and so on. You can volunteer at the polls (there are some jobs you wouldn’t be eligible for, but many you could do). My kid’s high school requires they work the polls as part of their government class, so I know it can be done. It usually works best to start at the local level, make contacts and a good name for yourself, and you can work your way up to higher positions.
