I’m a HS sophomore and I recently realized I might be interested in majoring in political science/international relations/related stuff. I’ve never done anything related to that field but it really intrigues me, so I want to get involved ASAP. I’m planning on joining Model UN, Young Dems, and a discussion club next year, but since I’m kind of late to these ECs as a junior I want to get started on activities this summer. What can I do to get involved? I’m seeing tons of posts talking about internships and getting involved with local campaigns and all that, but I have no idea where to start looking or how to approach it. I would also love some other options like programs, classes, volunteer opportunities, or any other projects. What can a 16 year old do in this field over the summer? Thanks!
The local campaign offices would appreciate your help. You could try googling “volunteer for [X] campaign in [your state]” - I came across several email addresses for presidential candidates that way. Also start following candidates on social media and show up at their events. My representative for the state House is always talking about some get together on Facebook and sometimes I see some local high schoolers on his page.
Not sure if this is just unique to my state, but look to see if there is a Governor’s page program near you.
The Governor’s Page Program offers students an in-depth view of state government. It lasts a week and during this, Pages will be assigned to assist staff in the Governor’s Office and will receive volunteer hours and a stipend.
If that doesn’t exist where you are, there could be similar things where you help out with local representatives or campaigns. Good luck!
