Ways to let UofM know they're your top school?

There are the usual ways like having your guidance counselor mention it, making a note in "additional info" for common app, and writing it in one of your supplements, but what are some creative and important ways to let a school (particularly UM) know they're at the top of your list?

Put them first on the list of schools you’re going to have your ACT scores sent to.

Do schools really see that?

Definitely apply as early as possible. Show your passion for the school on your essay. If you write a convincing essay on why you want to study at Michigan, showing that you have researched their offerings in your field(s) of study, and if you submit your complete application before October 1, it will definitely show interest. Following up with the admissions office to make sure that they have received everything (give it three weeks from the time you submit eveything, including your SAT/ACT).

I think it is a bit cheesy to say U-M is your top school but it is helpful to put something in your essay that shows you have thought about U-M and demostrates your interest in the school. It is easy to saw it’s your top school but takes more effort to show why. If you haven’t already, you should take a visit, explore beyond the standard tour and incorporate something about your visit in your essay. Also write about what you as a student can bring to U-M to make it better for the university community.

I would suggest visiting the campus and making an effort to connect with your michigan admissions counselor. My daughter also made a point to connect with her counselor at a college fair since we were OOS.

It’s always a good thing for an admissions counselor to put a face to a name/application.

And I agree apply early. The supplemental essays give you many ways to express your interest in Michigan.
