I have a 3.8 GPA and 1370 New Sat Score. However,I only took tow APs and took a few honors courses, but my schedules were not the most challenging and I go to a very competitive high school. All my classes next year are honors and AP. Other than academic merits, I’m kind of that “boring” type of person. I am an active member of many clubs(no leadership roles yet) and I have a summer job. But reading other college confidential members, I feel like I have no chance at Binghamton or Stony Brook. Can someone tell me if any chances for these schools. If not, then which other schools would you recommend for me? How much do these weigh extracirculars and the essay? I want to major in computer science.
I had a 4.0 and 1350 on the new SAT and i was accepted to both Stony Brook and Binghamton for one of their more selective majors, pharmacology. You meet the criteria when it comes to grades but you really need at least one leadership role wether it be captain of a team or president of a club. What helped me i think was that i had a lot of community service. I was also accepted into the university scholars at Stony brook and i didn’t have to best scores but my participation in my extracurriculars were above average. My advice to you is focus on college essays, getting good letters of recommendation ( i got 6, 1 guidance counselor, 2 science teachers, 1 spanish teacher, 1 soccer coach, and 1 from my boss), and get a leadership position. I know people from my school who had 33’s on their ACT and didn’t get into Stony Brook because they involved in nothing!!!

Honestly, I think your chances are pretty good. You’re not looking weak in any area.
My friend’s D is at Stony Brook this year and so is a friend’s son. Their grades were ok, but not stellar. The girl took a few honors and AP classes, but not nearly as many as other kids in our school district. The boy took a couple as well. Neither was very active in EC’s and neither held any leadership positions in anything. In fact, both are extremely shy and withdrawn kids. Both are at Stony Brook now and, per their moms, are happy and thriving. The girl’s mom was afraid her lack of EC’s would keep her out. She was waitlisted at some private colleges but got into SBU.
Good luck to you.
You look to be in range for all the schools on your list. Work hard to prepare the best possible application.
You should probably get into any suny you want. The only issue is if you want to get into the school of management at bing because they make it harder for in state students. If you are dead set on CS, stony brook has a much better program that bang anyway.
