is it ever bitterly cold and windy? (where you find yourself muttering under your breath, "I hate this weather").. b/c if not, UCLA is for me

Cold in Socal? Lol. It's burning hot for me there (I'm from NorCal)

Question...what are the differences between NorCal and SoCal weather-wise? What's the average temperature increase? Rain? Humidity?

Well not sure about SoCal, but NorCal rains a lot. Not Seattle like, but this winter it's still raining. Normally the rain starts Nov/Dec (or later) and goes through Feb and randomly throughout March and April. In NorCal it'll be rainy for a few days and then sunny for a few, so you still get some sun in the winter. There are days you won't feel like a jacket, and others where you don't want to forget a scarf. It never snows in the Bay Area (last time it happened in my city was like 30 years ago), though it does snow in NorCal in the mountains. The summers can get very hot, and from April till the end of school you'll have beautiful whether usually. Also the fall is really nice in NorCal.

Also there is like zero humidity. It's one of the best parts about NorCal. Oh, and only some parts of the Bay Area are foggy and glum all the time. SF is pretty foggy year round (though not always), but my city (20 mins away from SF) isn't ever foggy.

Now if you are talking about NorCal weather farther north, well that's an entirely diff story. But I'm assuming you mean for either Berkeley/Stanford.

Anyone else care to fill in about SoCal?

Well, I live in NorCal (South Bay to be exact), so I already know that...

I just want to know about SoCal. :D

Compared to NorCal, SoCal has better weather. California in general has some of the best weather in the entire world--not too hot or too cold, lots of sun. It's comfortable enough down here to the point where you almost never notice the weather. It just ceases to be a factor in your life.

We're so spoiled down here in SoCal that we think it sucks when it rains for two days, and the temperature is in the low 60s. That's rough weather for us. :)

I would call all that a waste then, but I love any chance I get to 1. brag about NorCal and 2. procrastinate HW.

:)

Yeah, in SoCal, the sun is pretty much always shining, even when it's raining or something. The summers here are dry, but some people like that better than humid heat. Weather really doesn't vary between the seasons; just days where it gets colder with rain, or clearer sky with more heat. It's really comfortable enough that your wardrobe doesn't have to change during the year (I'll wear the same thing all year, only putting on jacket or something if it gets windy).

Well I happen to dislike the heat in SoCal during the summer. I absolutly love the chilly winds here. And in SoCal I believe people don't need to dress in layers (if you dress at all..), since (for me) it's always hot.

i used to go "it's kinda chilly here" sometimes during the winter (ucla is somewhat close to the ocean) until i went to boston in february. socal is definitely NOT bitterly cold and windy like boston. heck, not even like san francisco!

i rarely dress in layers when in socal and i only do so for fashion purposes and not for practical weather-responding purposes.

i'm wondering what's the comparison in weather between the silicon valley and los angeles during the winter. i've heard SV is much better than SF.

i m from Southern China and i think west los angeles winter can get damn cold (like down jacket cold)

the winter in L.A. is perfect. end of discussion

I have never experienced weather more consistenly pleasant than the room-temperature, arid-yet-breezy climate of Southern California... And I've been to Canada, both East and West coasts of the U.S., Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, you name it... There is no better weather anywhere in the world when you consider the averaged climates/temperatures of all four seasons.

i've never needed a down jacket in socal. i only need a UCLA sweater on the coldest occassions. but i do think west LA does get colder (especially during the night times) when compared to other parts of the LA area.

To say "the weather in southern california" includes a lot, from burning deserts to mountains, beaches and valleys.

Curse this Nor Cal rain. It probably rains twice as often here as it does in So Cal, but twice as often as almost never isn't that often. (Note: numbers have been made up at the poster's discretion.) It's really not that bad, but what sort of sucks is that this years weather is supposedly worse than the past fifty years. But yet the weather is generally amazing, high sixties during the day, I'd imagine, maybe higher.

Really? Worst weather in 50 years? Because I don't feel like it's that bad...but maybe it's just because it's California.

shrug that's what I've heard. Dean Holub, one of my professors, said that this years weather is terrible, much more so than he can remember (and he's been here a while).

and when theres no sun... remember west la is still semi essert climate

like i sez, i from south china, interior city of Changsha... and my skin is thinner than like, anyone in my HS... ppl be like, how come u got so many veins...

I guess none of you guys have never really spent a whole lot of time in LA. You have to remember that the bulk of the school year is spent during the winter, spring, and fall. Even when we get out in June things don't really tend to heat up in So Cal until July. It can get real hot for a couple weeks at the beginning of the school year and the end (touching 90 at the high end), but usually not for too long. There is occassional rain in the winter but nothing too bad unless it's an El Nino year. Either way, for the vast majority of the year it is sunny and mild. As an ultimate frisbee player, I can tell you that the wind is nearly non existant.

That's the county as a whole. I would suspect warmer weather for Westwood, but i can't find anything that particular. Hot is relative. If you've lived in eastern Canada your whole life, you'd go to Palm Springs and sun tan during its summer time, and the locals would look at you like you're crazy.
