Wednesday travel

If anybody has a student traveling out west today there could be issues. The entire Denver metro area is under a blizzard warning - biggest storm in 4 years (calling for up to 2 feet through tomorrow). As Denver is a pretty big airline hub, may make for some tough travel. As of right now, some flights are still getting in and out, but some are also being canceled.

Eastbound Interstate 70 has just been closed from Denver to the Kansas state line....it's getting worse.

i hate snow...
i don't care if i have to get a sled and some dogs, i will sleep in my own bed tonight...

United Airlines has canceled all flights into and out of Denver from 1:00 today until at least midnight. Frontier has canceled 30-40 flights in and out as well. This will no doubt cause a "snowball effect" (sorry - again, I couldn't resist the easy one) with the rest of the major hubs around the country.

Wow folks. It really does look bad. Please be safe & hope all of those out west get in alright.

is2day4him, funny how I recall hearing a Plebe once tell me that he'd crawl on broken glass on his hands & knees to get home to his bed when his flight was cancelled due to the weather & he got stuck for hours. I know he relates to your issue today. Please let us know when you're back home & safe. If they happen to re-route you to the east coast, let me know & I'll come & get you before I let you stay in an airport all night. Seriously.

the little kids are using his mattress as a big ol' sled :)

We're monitoring - right now the flight from LGA is still scheduled, but that could change. Snow is supposed to continue through Thursday. My understanding is that the campus will be completely shut down?? Wonder if there is a contingency plan in situations like this?

Also, I imagine the USO and/or Red Cross would be able to assist our Midshipmen in the event anybody gets stranded?

Boy am I glad it's a 7 hour drive for me to KP....just in case

if it comes to it, i'll ask for them to bounce me to an airport with a USO lounge. cause i'm pretty sure LGA doesn't have one. and yeah, they fumigate all the barracks tomorrow morning. no one is allowed in for the week. i duct taped all my drawers so that my things wouldn't get stinky from the fumes...

and jamzmom, i just may have to take you up on that offer. we'll have to see what happens. i will be keeping my cell very close through all of this.

Surely the academy will remain opened with such circumstances going on. The airlines are going to be nuts for sure. Will keep watching to see whats going on.

Jamzmom can accomidate everyone in her 17 room auntie-bellum mansion in the Palmetto State where it is 70 degrees and sunnie-from official KP press release.

Also I understand sled dogs have been dispatched to Glen Cove to pick up stragglers.

Boss its gonna be 78 on saturday. Hey, I won't have it said that a Plebe was stranded near the south & didn't get good old southern hospitality. Atleast if they can't have their own bed, they can get one close to it + breakfast. Heh.

I heard the same about the sled dogs..... :D

So this is getting worse and worse. ALL flights are canceled...I called and the first flight they can get him on is Saturday. Holy Smokes this is starting to suck.

Last word is that he's in his SDB bound for LGA to sweet talk somebody...film at 11:00. His advisor was nice enough to make the drive...hat's off to Dr. Melcer (sp?)

Well, not good. The Jamz is at LGA & said there are Plebes sitting around with heads in hands. He said they announced this morning that the academy will house the kids tonight in other dorms that aren't getting the spray treatment so they may have to catch a cab back to the academy to wait it out. Of all days to have a blizzard. Dang it all.

He added that if it were him, he'd rather stay at the airport to wait it out. Atleast they had a McDonald's.

How 'bout this one? Is2Day can't be on a confirmed flight until December 27th!! How's that for a dose of bad news?

However, they've decided to get to LGA early in the morning to start begging for standby seats. Anybody out there got any juice with the airlines? There are quite a few Colorado kids stuck in the mess. However, Dr. Melcer has opened his home for them until Sunday. Talk about going above and beyond....

Noooooo! That is terrible news. So sorry for you guys. Wish I knew what to do on this one. What a mess. Maybe things will clear out by tomorrow.

Plan B - Send him to me. Now. :D

yeah - bad news - but also a little lesson here, right? Improvise, adapt, etc? Life changes a bit when you start growing up...

As for Plan B - no - I'd never get him back....I remember the stories about chocolate cake for breakfast.

Jrh...what airline is he flying...did he have a ticket or was he on standby??(I am an American Airlines retirree and have a few friendas there) I also have some freinds at Delta..not probable to Denver though...this is awful...but my experience tells me he has heard the worst case scenerio...keep us informed...there is a bed for him in ATL as well..our plebe would welcome his company...cjc

He had a ticket on Frontier from LGA to DEN scheduled to arrive DEN at 11:59...but that got canceled. He and some buds made it to LGA and he was re-ticketed for the 27th, but was told to get back to the desk at open (0530) tomorrow to look for a standby seat.

He's back at KP for the night - planning on leaving way early to see what can be done. My understanding is that there's nothing leaving or coming in until tomorrow afternoon at the earliest - our governor has declared an emergency situation....it's sucking right now.

He called and mentioned that some kids had rented a car and were planning on driving through. BAD IDEA....this is a major storm and is moving that way. If your kids are part of it, tell them to stay put until they can get on a plane!!!

cjcatl - THANKS!!!! It's all about being in the KP family, right? Send me a private message if you've got any good info for me!!!!

thanks - jeff

(fyi - for some interesting weather pics - check out my blog at http://lafaminit.blogspot.com -

Chocolate cake is good for little ones. Makes 'em grow big, strong & healthy.
Hated to hear the news. He'll make it tomorrow. You just have to believe. ;) My heart goes out to those poor guys/gals. They just want to go home so badly. The car thing wasn't a great idea for sure. Hope they play it smart & stop when it gets too bad.

Your photos are pretty neat to see. Whats it like to wake up & say, "Honey, where's the car?" I just can't even imagine. Brrrrr. I'd freak out in that stuff. I'd have to use socks for my mittens I'm afraid....
