Weight of Essay

Don't worry. This isn't one of those annoying threads from someone complaining about something they have no power over. This one actually matters... supposedly. We shall see.

Anyway, so on CC, it seems all I ever hear is common application essay, common application essay, and common application essay. So, naturally this brings up the question of supplement essays. Just how important are they in an admissions decision... relative to the common application essay? Should everyone put just as much time into this essay as they do the common application essay or no?

All the colleges say that their supplemental essays are really really important. I would say don’t take a chance. The essay is the last thing you can change now.

i suppose so… any other responses?

I think that - to a point - some of the supplement essays show strength of interest in that particular college, since many supplement essays can’t be reused… totally my opinion though

Supplement essays are very important especially so that you don’t find yourself a victim of “Tufts Syndrome.”

However, if you spend say 3 hrs per essay, then you should spend say 18 hrs on the common app for 6 common app schools because you use it 6 times. People worry about the common app one more because it that one fails than all your apps will fail whereas if your supplement one fails than only one schools will reject you.
