Weight of summer internship

Hey everybody,

I'm really interested into getting into UPENN. I have an avg gpa, a high sat, and lots of ec's, but that's not what I want to ask about

Last summer, I got an internship at a UPENN research facility. The lab head is a professor at Penn and she absolutely loved me during the time I spent there. This summer, I will be at the same internship at the same lab and will also be volunteering at the hospital at the university of Pennsylvania. I'm sure she'll write me an amazing rec, so I'm just wondering how much this summer stuff will influence my application to Penn. Since I was a little kid, I wanted to go there, and will be ed'ing there

How much weight does this summer internship and amazing rec from a professor count for?

Thanks

Also, will I be able to count my hours there as volunteer hours? I didn’t get a stipend last year but I will this summer

It will help you tremendously. Especially if you are applying to UPenn? what internship did you participate in?

It has a good amount of weight but keep in mind it will not get you in.

I’m ed’ing to UPENN this fall.

I got into it at the suggestion of a familyfriend, whose son did this internship as well and got in

While your rec may increase your chances of being accepted, internships are not as important as people think. My son was in the same situation several years ago but he was rejected from upenn (thus ruining the family legacy…)

^lol he ruined the legacy.

While your internship may serve you well as far as recommendations/eperience go, it will not make you a shoo-in. My friend did research last summer with Harvard research faculty, got recommendations, but didn’t get in - but your internship sounds different, I think you have a good shot, but don’t rely solely on this internship, good luck!

Thank you to all who replied.

I feel that without my internship, I’m am average candidate to the ivies. I am by no means relying on this as a surefire way to get in.

Wow ryee get me in

who is ryee?

^hi mitchell

i’m also a junior, and i’ve been doing lab research at the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center (: I might also ask my lab head to write me a recommendation, but i don’t know how much that’ll help. i’m in the same position though, my gpa is avg because i’ve been stressed out lately :</p>

but i’m also doing the Wistar Internship this summer, so hopefully that’ll look good on my app.

Bumppppp

No, your internship will not weigh very much.

Yes, internships and recommendations weigh very little.

^haha (hmmmm. have to write atleast 10 characters, so that explains the random babble.)

Well, while an internship and a good recommendation do carry some clout into an admissions decision, and obviously you know that you aren’t relying on this internship solely as your means for admission. However, I still think you might be an average candidate for the Ivies even with this internship. There are many people out there who are “really interested into getting into UPenn” and are doing the exact same (if not similar) thing you’re doing.

Mind you, the Ivies are fickle, they’ll want different people with a different class, so your chances could either be good or bad. Really, at this point, you’ll know your true chances come December.
