Weighted Blanket?

We are heading into a winter of potential discontent. Has anyone tried a weighted blanket? Do you have recommendations on brands or comments on costs?

My daughter, who has anxiety, uses a weighted blanket and loves it. I don’t remember the brand, I just ordered something fairly generic on Amazon. Just be aware that these blankets are REALLY heavy. I don’t think I would like one personally, in part because making the bed would be such a pain.

I bought one last spring when my anxiety was very high. I love it! I bought it on Amazon and it’s 15 lbs, which I think is plenty - heavier than you would think. It’s a YnM bamboo and cost was $67.90. I haven’t used it since last May but it helped me through some tough nights at the beginning of the pandemic, and I may be pulling it out in the next 2 weeks!

I bought one for about $30 on amazon. Nice quality. The kids use it (they are teens). I think it helps.

I bought a Pendleton weighted blanket as a gift last year. I trust that brand.m

I bought one last year for Xmas. I love it but got out of the habit of using it over the summer. I made sure to buy one with a removable cover so it could be washed. Not all of them have that. You are also supposed to get one approximately 10% of your body weight. I went with 15 pounds which is a tad heavier. It’s fine, but 15 pounds feels so heavy picking it up. Not like a dumbbell at all. I don’t keep it on the bed. I have a Rubbermaid bin in the corner where I sling it, so we don’t have to struggle with it while making the bed.

My son has terrible problems falling asleep, could be partially due to anxiety. I bought him a weighted blanket from Amazon for Xmas, here it is. It’s heavy but he likes it. As a matter of fact, I see it’s on his bed again after the summer months. It’s not perfect but it helps. During the summer I bought a sound machine for him. He’s says it’s ok, but I can hear it on behind his door in the mornings.

The one @conmama posted above…the 15 pound one is listed as $63 with a checkbox for an extra $15 off right now bringing it to $48 at the moment - you can put your own duvet over it if you prefer.

I received one for Christmas a couple of years ago and love it, but I only use it while watching TV. I’ve never put it on my bed and slept under it. I’m prone to hot flashes at night sigh. Have any of you in a similar situation used it at night, and have you had trouble with it sleeping even hotter than you think it would?

Thank you all for the comments. I’m wondering if we should get two throws rather than a bed-size blanket.

I bought one on Amazon for my teen son who is on the spectrum and has trouble sleeping and he refused to use it so I used it for awhile. I tend to sleep well already so I don’t know how well it worked. I think there is a formula for what weight you should purchase-like a certain percentage of the body weight of the person using it. Maybe 10%…but not sure.

Oh geez, yes! Do not get a bed-sized blanket or you’ll need to have someone lift it onto the bed. Of course I say this as a giver of a weighted blanket, never a user, but when the WB I bought for my then-16 yo son arrived, I laughed out loud because it was so ridiculously, well, heavy. It was a Christmas present, and I was sure he would look at me like I’d sprouted an extra head. But he was really excited about it, and a year later, he still sleeps under it every night. I don’t think it is really meant to cover an entire bed. His is throw-size and covers his 6’ self fine, without requiring a moving crew to make the bed.

Make sure you get one with baffles or else the filling will all fall to one end. I think I would really like to use one if I didn’t already get so hot at night.

@conmama, @abasket - I’m thinking of ordering that blanket for me to try, and then for my son to try (I’m guessing I won’t be able to stand it because I toss and turn a lot). What size should I get if I am only going to use it for sleeping/on the bed? Thanks

I bought one out of curiosity last winter after my DS#2 wanted one for his wife, who had trouble sleeping b/c of his snoring! I am not sure if it helped to do much other than keep me warm. I also put it away for the summer. Will need to figure out where I put it and pull it out for the winter.

@1214mom There are weight suggestions depending on a persons weight. He weighs 180 and should have only got a 15lb., but insisted on a 20. Now he thinks it’s too heavy, so definitely go by your weight and don’t go up.

@conmama, I mean size as in dimensions. For only using while sleeping.
Thanks

@1214mom , we just got the one that fit on a queen bed, a 60 x 80.

I had bought one for DD who then received one as a gift, so I kept the one I bought and started using it. It is a twin and we have a king bed, and that is perfect because DH does not want to sleep under it. I really love it; For years I always needed to have covers on me - thinking back, it wasn’t so much that i was cold, but I really liked the way the covers felt on my back, shoulders etc.

Even if DH wanted one, I would go with 2 twin sizes, so you aren’t struggling to move it and each partner can use or not use it.

Just to echo, think about the weight. I tried my daughter’s, which is 15 lb and it’s too heavy for me. Can’t speak directly to the 10% of body weight but, at least for myself and my D, a “lighter” weighted blanket was better than one too heavy. Not sure how helpful my comment is because it’s so subjective but that’s been our experience. And agree about the baffling too.
