Weighted vs. Unweighted GPA

Which one is the one colleges look at. On one hand, unweighted could be mroe important because it actually shows teh great you got in classes. But then weighted could be more important because it takes into consideration course rigor. So which one????????

Thanks <3

bump…

Generally they look at UW in the context of the rigor of your courseload. But, some look at W and when they report the GPA of their admitted and matriculated students in a lot of cases it’s the W number.

Weighting systems vary widely by school, so your unweighted GPA will be considered in the context of your course rigor.

What does “in the context of your course rigor” mean??

Most colleges ask for your unweighted GPA. One person on here applied somewhere where admissions asked for your unweighted average, but that’s not typical.

It means they look at your UW GPA relative to the type of classes you took, i.e., a 4.0 in introductory/basic classes is viewed very differently that a 4.0 with lots of Honors, Accelerated or AP classes.

Generally speaking colleges look at unweighted GPA and then adjust for the rigor of your classes and their perception of the quality of your school. There are too many weighting systems out there for them to rely on the weighted averages (Typically the weighted approach uses a 5 point scale but there have been posters here on CC with schools that use 6-, 7-, 9- and I vaguely remember one poster who had a 12-point scale).
