Just got an email with the following excerpt today:

"The Columbia community is committed to environmental responsibility; in keeping with this commitment, we will provide some admissions decisions only online, not via regular mail"

Obviously, if they've given me a pin and an online status check, I didn't get in, right? I'd think that their enviornmentally friendly concerns woudl only apply to those who were rejected or waitlisted, not to the accepted students who'd receive big packages.

That doesn’t follow, as everyone is going to want to get the decision as soon as possible instead of waiting for the mail. It probably does mean that bad news won’t be sent in the mail at all. Wesleyan did it that way, but they put the results online for everyone.

I received a likely letter from Columbia as well as that same e mail. It would seem especially cruel to follow up a likely letter with a stone cold rejection e mail.

The way that colleges do admissions decisions is highly stressful.

cortana431 is right, it only means that accepted students will receive a package from Columbia, rejected or waitlisted students will be able to see their admission decisions online. Because lets be honest you don’t really want to keep a rejection letter anyway and schools know this. So to save the environment (read: save money) they will show it online only. If after seeing it, you decide you want a copy then you can request one.

If you check out the Columbia admissions home page there is an RD application update that includes word-for-word the excerpt you cited above about some decisions being online. They are not singling out any specific students so don’t stress! The wording is certainly awkward but I think they are notifying all applicants of their decision online and following up with an acceptance package only to those that got in. Good luck!

^Actually, it was here on the forum last year or the year before that someone reported being rejected after receiving a LL. I thought it was pretty cruel…
