I see many Freshmen walking around campus now that it's Summer B and I would like to say welcome to The Swamp! :)
It's funny because as excited as you are to be here, we (the older students...at least the other underclassmen...I'm a sophomore) are excited to meet you and to help you out with any questions you might have.
That being said, if you have any questions feel free to shoot me a PM or post here.

A little bit about me:
Bio major, pre-health track (have done research into the PhD track too, however)
Work in a lab on-campus
In a social sorority (Greek life)

Hello, I have a few questions about cooking my own food. Is there one kitchen per floor? If so, do they have a stove, microwave, sink, etc.

How did you go about working in the lab? Who to talk to and what not? And best advice for taking the core math and science classes like calc and chemistry?

Hello, I have a few questions about cooking my own food. Is there one kitchen per floor? If so, do they have a stove, microwave, sink, etc.
A: In the dorms, yes, there is one kitchen per floor. There is a stove, microwave, and sink, but they are all oftentimes dirty. Also, I think trying to cook your food is somewhat of a lost cause unless your major isn’t too time consuming/difficult. I’d look into meal plans!

A: I emailed a bunch of professors (I took a class called Science for Life that was one credit and put me into contact with all of the university resources as concerning research…or you can go to the UF HHMI website and look at mentors) and, out of 20, 2 got back to me.
Unless you’ve taken the AP and did reasonably well (I’m talking a 4 or a 5), do not take both Calc and Chem in the same semester. The advisors will tell you differently, but this is a way for them to weed out students. I staggered the Chem and Calc sequence (Chem in one sem and Calc in the other) and did much better. Freshman year is all about adjustment, so unless you’re completely capable, don’t take more than 1 hardcore class that you’ve never encountered before. There is no rush, and I’m taking Bio my first sem sophomore year (this fall) though I did know some of my friends who took it in Freshman year. Go at a pace that’s comfortable for you and where you know you’ll succeed.

What would be your advice to be successful while living on campus? what things did you not think of to bring to UF? How are the bathrooms/showers at dorms?

A: Learning to manage time is pivotal in being successful in general. By that I mean…get a giant calendar, get a cell phone holster, get a caravener and a hook for your keys…anything to minimize time spent looking for necessary things or stress spent over lack of planning.
I brought everything I needed to UF and moved in all by myself (and I’m a girl in a sorority). I had one huge duffle bag and two smaller containers with my things. I was able to fit it all on 2 trips to my car with the dolley. Buy any extra things you need here at the Wal-mart or Target; don’t over-do it. Showers/bathrooms are decent, you’ll get used to them. Make sure to buy a bathrobe and shower caddy!

thanks. Also, is there mandatory summer enrollement? (for transfer students?). someone told me that there was.

A: I think there is mandatory summer enrollment for everybody as they want to ensure that you get your degree and get moving so as not to waste resources (such as space).

Does UF have a men’s soccer team? I spent a few minutes trying to find out and it seems like they only have a women’s team. I ask since my cousin loves soccer. And if so how are they?
