That should definitely be a possibility for a double-major, especially since you got out of many core classes. Keep in mind that there is also a philosophy minor, which you may find more manageable.
It is more common for kids (in all schools) to have a major and a minor, as opposed to a double major. You will need to make sure you have room in your schedule for all of the requirements for both majors. (And you should still have room for some fun stuff and your remaining core classes).
Here are some CSOM combos that I have seen:
-Marketing major and Women & Gender Studies minor
-Marketing major and Operations major (both CSOM)
-Finance major and Operations major (both CSOM)
-any CSOM major and International Studies minor
-any CSOM major and Medical Humanities minor
-any CSOM major and any language minor (Spanish, French, Chinese, etc)
So as you can see, it really varies! I would speak with your advisor at some point during your first semester about double-majoring. This isn’t something you need to declare right away. I would start by taking both your required CSOM classes and some philosophy classes (ex: your philosophy core) during your freshman year to see if you really want to take on two majors.
Philosophy is a great double major, particularly since the dept is somewhat flexible about the requirements. As a result, BC has quite a few PL doubles.
PL also happens to be as strong dept at BC, so win-win.
@tiva_mcabby5@bluebayou I have thought about the philosophy double major just because it was something that interested me. However, would it hurt in the long run with a lower GPA? Is philosophy considered a lower average GPA major or is it not too hard to get good grades? I liked how philosophy was more of an intellectual major and a nice complement to such a career focused major like finance.
Also, do you know about getting into the honors program? I didn’t get in as a freshman, but I saw online that they invite some freshman second semester for the CSOM honors program. Do you know anyone that got in like this and what they had to do?
I don’t know many philosophy majors so I have no idea what their GPAs may be… off the top of my head the “lower average GPA majors” are things like bio and chem.
I really have no idea if it’s easy to get good grades or not! Like any major, if you put in a lot of work, you should expect to do pretty well!
RE honors program:
I know basically nothing about CSOM honors, so I’m not sure if I can be of much help here. I know you can appeal to get into MCAS honors, but I don’t know what the process is…I imagine you would email the dean? But you have to prove that you’re a good fit. If you appeal as a freshman, they will look at your first semester grades, not just your HS grades. They might not even look at high school at all.
I’m guessing the appeal process is the same for CSOM (if there is one).
I do know that one requirement for CSOM honors is that as a freshman, the students have to either take Perspectives or the MCAS Honors class (Western Cultural Tradition)…which are essentially the same class. So if you do decide to appeal, and you get accepted, just know you’ll be adding that to your schedule. (It’s only required for freshman year)
Wow, that was probably my least helpful answer ever…I’m sorry I know so little about those topics!
My D doubled in PL, and really enjoyed the intellectual discussions. (She also had several AP credits, so she had more options for electives.)
She was not in CSOM. She did look into A&S Honors as a Soph, but she also wanted to participate in PULSE, so the Honors program didn’t offer that much extra to her schedule, so she did not pursue it. However, that itself is probably of little help since CSOM honors is separate.
btw: you can earn Departmental Honors in A&S by writing a thesis, so if you get excited about PL or some other A&S major, you could always do that. A thesis is a major time sink, so consider quality of senior life while also interviewing, before you go down that path.
I know that appeals are possible into CSOM although that it very hard. However, you can always major in economics in MCAS and try to take classes in CSOM. CSOM is overrated anyways.
I am bumping this thread for anyone who just got in EA for the class of 2022 or for those who are still applying/waiting to hear back! If anyone has more questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.
As an update, I am now a senior (Class of 2018) but everything else about me is the same as when this was originally posted.
@sual17
They’re very different. Eagle’s is only open for lunch and has great paninis, sandwiches, wraps, and salads. However, if you get there at the wrong time, you might be in line for half an hour.
Lower on the other hand is open all day but is busiest at dinner time. Variety isn’t great, but the food tastes good. It can be hard to find a table if you go around 6pm.
Overall, I prefer Eagle’s Nest, but it’s not an option for breakfast or dinner.
how do i get into the class of 2022 facebook group? i’ve requested it and they’ve allowed other people to join since but not me–do you know if i need proof of acceptance or something?
@veagle18 Nope, you just have to wait it out. They’ll add you eventually. There’s usually an official group and an unofficial group, but that difference doesn’t mean anything really.
