Does anyone know when the parents are asked to leave during welcome days? I assume we leave on the 19th of August...move in day...but is there a ceremony, any parent programs that day?...or do we take off as soon as we move our son/daughter in? Also...is there any sort of order to the move in?...certain dorms come at certain times or anything like that?

Here’s the move in brochure from last year:

There was also a Marshall parent reception late afternoon that we attended before heading home.

This was the most organized operation I think I have ever seen. There is not a certain time that you must arrive - move-in is constant all day long. You will be assigned a certain entrance based on your student’s dorm and and directed to an unloading area. You quickly unload everything to the curb and then one member of your party gets back in the car and parks (free) in a designated structure. The student goes to check in while a parent sits on the curb with the “stuff.” If two parents came along, one should get in line for a cart (the carts are huge and can carry a LOT) while the other sits with the stuff and the student is checking in. Bringing your own handcart(s) is a good idea - the line for carts can be long. EVERYONE is friendly and helpful and organized.

Because students are arriving from early morning until late afternoon, there isn’t an organized ceremony for “everyone.” There was a parent reception early afternoon - the kids are supposed to escort their parents to it, give hugs, say goodbye, and leave them there.

We didn’t go to the parent reception - I think we were in the middle of carrying all her worldy belongings up three flights of stairs while she and her roommates set the room up. We were exhausted and hot, so we had her use two “guest meals” from her meal plan to get us into Parkside Restaurant where we stayed for two hours resting and enjoying the air conditioning (and eating!) while she and her roommates got to know each other.

Then she proudly showed us her room all set up. Next we went to the bookstore to get “USC” merchandise, gave hugs, shed tears, and headed home. A good day.

@alamemom…I got chocked up reading your post…“give hugs, say good-bye”…I don’t look forward to that part…
Thanks for all the info, it is really helpful. Certainly makes it easier to make my plans. I have already booked the Raddison as we will be there for the 2 days prior for the International orientation.

@SoCalGal09…thanks so much for the link.

This makes it all seem so real now!

I got choked up writing it :)

Move-in day is August 19th? I need help navigating the USC website to find the calendar!

It’s the 18th actually!

August 18

Many of the schools/departments schedule receptions for parents & students in the late afternoon of move-in day. The SCA has a really wonderful event and I noticed several others going on as well. Not sure about CLAS.

There were many cc parents at our USC SCA reception in Fall 2008 and we met IRL for the first time there–as did our students who are still friends today. Aww.

This thread is making me sad… but happy. Happy sad. I got a little choked up at Explore, to be honest. What they showed us of Thornton was simply amazing and made me so proud of my son.

USC sure does know how to run these event days, though. I have no doubt move-in day will be like clockwork.
