Looking move in day help. Driving from San Diego and wondering if we could avoid some of the move in traffic by arriving real early or would it be better to arrive late afternoon? I believe the dorms open for student move in at 8:30am, what time do the gates open? Can we use the gate near Fluor Tower or does every one enter through gate 1? Thanks for any recommendations.

My experience was back in 2007, but we figured we’d arrive a little later (11 AM) to avoid the early crush. It took an hour to travel the less than one mile distance from the freeway to the Exposition Blvd. entrance we were instructed to use. The holdup is having to wait while people unload their cars. I will be doing it again this year with younger child and will probably plan on arriving later in the day. Your room isn’t going anywhere if you get there later. I wish they’d assign arrival times like some schools do to better manage the traffic.

cdmn–is it true? Your younger child decided on USC? Wheee! I am glad to hear it. Like ellebud and me (and HiMom, and others!), you are a 2-timer.

madbean,
My parents had three of us at SC at one time!

I noticed on the commencement notes a set of triplets graduated this May.

GG, words fail me! lol.

I’d say either really early, or much later, after the early people are done. If you have more stuff, come earlier, but if you’re not bringing much, you might as well wait.

Son and I did move in day last year. It was one of the most organized experiences of my life. He was give a window of time to arrive on campus and the specific gate to use for moving into his dorm. We were in a long line of cars at our gate (gate 2 if I remember correctly). Once we passed through the gates we were approached by a housing staff member who had my son get out of the car and go get his room keys and find a laundry cart. While he was doing that the line kept moving forward. By the time he had gotten his keys I’d arrived at the front of Pardee and was directed to a parking spot in front of the dorm. We unloaded the car within 15 minutes.

His arrival time was 9:45. The car was unpacked and in the parking garage by 11AM. We unpacked and stowed his stuff by 12:30 and were eating lunch outside by 1PM. Unless the process changes this year, and I can’t see why it would, show up when they tell you to get there, getting there early or late only gums up the works.

oh, I didn’t know they’d started assigning arrival times! That’s smart. They didn’t do that in fall 2010.

When DS moved in in 2006, we moved his stuff in the night before by paying an extra $50. Dont know if that is still possible, but boy, was it ever nice!! Dumped his gear and went out to dinner. No waiting in line the next day!

When will arrival times or early move in options be made available and by what medium?

Last year, we drove in from the vagabond at about 8AM. We went to the parking structure next to Fluor, a turn around was set up at the bottom of the structure. They had people directing traffic. Maybe a 5-10 minute wait to offload into laundry bins. Another 10 minute wait at the Fluor elevator. It looked a bit more crowded later in the morning.

FWIW, at orientation this week they said that the late arrival strategy works well. There are so many that just have to be underway at the crack of dawn or who have early flights out. Makes sense.

I remember the whole process taking less than an hour, waited in line to enter gate 1, quickly dropped off luggage and some plastic bins and that was all. The parents came later in the day with no wait to drop off other small items.

Does anyone know how moving in a little late works? I have a cheaper flight option for move in day itself, and I’m not sure that I would reach USC in time for my allotted time slot. Is it a big deal If I’m late? (I’ll still move in the 22nd)

For the incoming freshman, did you guys already get your move-in time??? Because it seems like usc3539 already got what time she is supposed to move in, but I didn’t.

Also if you guys did receive what time you are supposed to move in, how did you guys get it?? Through the mail or your emails?

Haha relax bro I haven’t got anything yet. I just wanted to know in case it happened. (btw i’m a guy). Does anyone know?

usc3539, I am so sorry. I don’t know why I put she. I guess that since I am a girl I just assumed that you were a girl. sry :)

Haha no worries. I apologize too, I thought you were a guy at first Anyways, I’ve read they begin sending out move in info in August so I guess we just relax for another month

D went to Orientation last week and texted me that her move in time is 8:30. I don’t know if that is what she was assigned or that when it starts. I kind of think it’s the latter.
